Cebaco Island, Panama

Floating in the warm waters of the Gulf of Chiriquí off Panama's Pacific coast, Cebaco Island is the kind of destination that divides travellers into those who have heard of it and those who cannot believe they have not. This lush, mountainous island — roughly fifteen kilometres long and five wide — supports dense tropical forest, deserted black-sand beaches, and offshore waters teeming with marine life, yet remains almost entirely undeveloped, without paved roads, hotels, or even reliable electricity.

The character of Cebaco is defined by its magnificent neglect. A small fishing community occupies one end of the island, their brightly painted wooden houses scattered beneath coconut palms. The remainder is wild — forested mountains rising to over four hundred metres, fringed by beaches accessible only by boat or by rough trails through the jungle. Howler monkeys announce the dawn from the canopy, scarlet macaws flash through the treetops, and at night the forest throbs with the calls of frogs and insects in a symphony of tropical darkness.

Cebaco's surrounding waters are the stuff of sport-fishing legend. The Gulf of Chiriquí's underwater topography — a series of submerged ridges and seamounts — creates upwellings that attract extraordinary concentrations of pelagic fish. Black and blue marlin, yellowfin tuna, roosterfish, and Pacific sailfish are all caught in these waters with a frequency that puts more famous destinations to shame. For non-anglers, the snorkelling and diving around Cebaco's rocky points reveal reef fish, sea turtles, and the occasional whale shark during the rainy season.

The marine biodiversity extends to the Coiba National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that lies just to the south. The park encompasses Coiba Island — once Panama's most notorious penal colony, now one of the most important marine conservation areas in the eastern Pacific. The reefs around Coiba are among the largest on the Pacific coast of the Americas, and encounters with hammerhead sharks, manta rays, and humpback whales (from July through October) are not uncommon. Day trips from Cebaco make this extraordinary park accessible.

Cebaco Island is reached by boat from Puerto Mutis or the town of Santiago on the Azuero Peninsula, with the crossing taking approximately ninety minutes. There are a handful of eco-lodges and fishing camps that offer basic but comfortable accommodation. The dry season from December to April provides the sunniest conditions, while the rainy season (May to November) brings the best fishing and whale watching. Expedition cruise ships occasionally anchor offshore, tendering passengers to the beach for a half-day of exploration.
