Tunisia's capital lies at the western end of the shallow Lake Tunis, which opens to the sea at La Goulette. This is the first of a string of beach suburbs that stretches away to the north; it is here that the city's port is located. This coastal area includes the ruins of ancient Carthage and the picturesque suburb of Sidi Bou Said, places that attract more visitors than Tunis itself. As far as capital cities go, Tunis has an easy-going, unhurried air about it. In Tunisia, the struggle for independence didn't take the violent course that it did in Algeria. Ruler Ahmed Bey, who governed from 1837 to 1855, encouraged Westernization and brought in military and other advisors to this end. In 1861, during the reign of Mohammed Sadiq, a constitution - the first in the Arab world - was proclaimed. Until the time of the French protectorate, the medina was very much the center of things. Then, under the French influence, the ville nouvelle (new city) emerged with its major banks, department stores, and administrative services. The main focus of ville nouvelle is the wide, tree-lined Avenue Habib Bourguiba. At its western end, this major thoroughfare becomes the Avenue de France, terminating in the Place de la Victoire and the entrance to the medina.
Valletta (or Il-Belt) is the tiny capital of the Mediterranean island nation of Malta. The walled city was established in the 1500s on a peninsula by the Knights of St. John, a Roman Catholic order. It’s known for museums, palaces and grand churches. Baroque landmarks include St. John’s Co-Cathedral, whose opulent interior is home to the Caravaggio masterpiece "The Beheading of Saint John."
On the heights above the Strait of Messina between Sicily and the Italian mainland, the Greeks built a magnificent city, later expanded by the Romans. Its strategic location ensured its continued importance throughout history, and today makes it one of the most attractive and important archaeological sites in Europe. The dominant feature is the large Greco-Roman theater, which boasts striking views of the still-active volcano Mt. Etna. Ruins and remnants are strewn across the hillside setting, inviting visitors to stroll and explore, either on their own or with guides. The town, likewise, is loaded with charm and appeal that invites walking and wonder. Snow-capped Mt. Etna is accessible for visitors when it is not too active.
Spectacular tiers of colour splashed houses cascade down to immeasurably blue seas and hidden coves, along Italy’s premier coastline. Lemon groves and vineyards bask in the country’s generous southern sun, running alongside dramatic mountain precipices, and dazzlingly romantic fishing villages. A dramatic ramp of steps rears up to Amalfi's distinctive black and white striped, Moorish-influenced cathedral, which stands at the heart of the town. Inside, tranquillity awaits amid the arches and columns of the Cloister of Paradise. Chattering piazzas, where ice cubes clink in glowing spritz cocktails, and strong espressos are savoured, hum with life nearby. Enjoy plates of shellfish tangled spaghetti or spicy pezzente salami in your choice of the Amalfi Coast’s celebrated restaurants, before tasting locally-squeezed limoncello - the perfect denouement to any meal here. Grand villas, spectacular restaurants and well-heeled visitors have long given Amalfi a reputation for refined luxury, but things haven’t always been so peaceful here. In the 10th and 11th centuries, Amalfi was an independent maritime republic, and the Municipal Museum of Amalfi is the place to learn of the region’s rise to global trading prominence, and the devastating tsunami that washed it all away in 1343.
