Darwin is Australia's tropical Top End capital, where sixty-five thousand years of Indigenous heritage meets extraordinary multiculturalism, saltwater crocodiles, and gateway access to Kakadu's ancient rock art. Must-do experiences include the Mindil Beach Sunset Market, swimming beneath Litchfield's waterfalls, and viewing twenty-thousand-year-old Aboriginal paintings at Ubirr. May through October's Dry season offers clear skies and outdoor market culture.
Cape York is the remote northern tip of Australia, where ancient Aboriginal cultures spanning over 40,000 years meet the Torres Strait's Melanesian heritage amid tropical savanna and pristine reef systems. Must-dos include standing at the continent's northernmost point, exploring indigenous cultural sites, and observing the wildlife-rich mangrove coastline. June through August offers the most comfortable conditions during the dry season.
Despite it being a stalwart of Britishness, Stanley more resembles Patagonia than Portsmouth. But, despite the windswept, vast and achingly beautiful landscape of the Falkland Islands, don’t be too surprised to find the odd pub serving ales and even fish’n’chips. While landmarks such as Christ Church Cathedral, with its whalebone arch are 100% local, there is a also good smattering of imported garden gnomes and Union Jacks to remind you whose territory you are really on.

Alotau is the gateway to Papua New Guinea's Milne Bay, one of Earth's most biodiverse marine regions with over 1,400 islands harboring extraordinary coral reefs, manta rays, and the living Kula Ring ceremonial exchange. Must-dos include snorkeling the world-class reefs, visiting the waterfront market by outrigger canoe, and experiencing a traditional mumu feast. Visit May to October for the best diving conditions.
Fergusson Island is the largest of Papua New Guinea's D'Entrecasteaux Islands, where active geothermal hot springs bubble through the jungle, birds of paradise perform courtship displays in the cloud forest, and the ancient kula ring trading tradition continues among coastal communities. Must-do experiences include visiting the Dei Dei Hot Springs' rainbow-colored geothermal pools, snorkeling the pristine coral reefs, and witnessing traditional singsing performances in village settings. May through October offers the driest conditions for this remote and extraordinary island, accessible by light aircraft or expedition cruise vessel in one of the Pacific's least-visited archipelagoes.
Jacquinot Bay is a large open bay on the eastern coast of the island of New Britain. It is a tranquil place with white sandy beaches and tropical palm trees all around. There is also a well-known beautiful waterfall that flows out of the mountainside with freezing cold water right onto the beach. But during WWII, however, it was not a quiet place. It was, in fact, an important base for the Australian Army who liberated it in November 1944. This base was used to support Australian operations near Rabaul which were conducted in early 1945 in conjunction with advances on the northern side of New Britain.

Rabaul is a partially buried volcanic town in Papua New Guinea's Simpson Harbour caldera, where the steaming Tavurvur cone, extensive Japanese wartime tunnels, and vibrant Tolai cultural traditions create one of the Pacific's most extraordinary port experiences. Visit during the dry season from May through October for volcano hikes, wartime archaeology, and diving enriched reefs.

K'gari (Fraser Island) is the world's largest sand island off Queensland, Australia, featuring ancient rainforests growing from sand, over 100 pristine freshwater lakes, and Australia's purest dingo population. Must-dos include swimming in the crystalline waters of Lake McKenzie, driving Seventy-Five Mile Beach past the SS Maheno shipwreck, and watching humpback whales from shore. Visit August through October for whale season, warm dry weather, and ideal conditions for lake swimming and wildlife spotting.
Kennedy Island is the tiny Solomon Islands coral islet where Lieutenant John F. Kennedy and his PT-109 crew survived for six days after their boat was sunk by a Japanese destroyer in 1943, now a peaceful palm-covered speck surrounded by world-class diving waters. Must-do experiences include visiting the island to walk where the future president took refuge, diving the World War II wrecks that litter The Slot's seafloor, and exploring the extraordinary coral diversity of the Solomon Islands' Coral Triangle reefs. May through November offers the driest conditions for diving and island exploration in this historically significant and remarkably unspoiled corner of the Pacific.
Santa Ana (Owaraha) is a small volcanic island in the Solomon Islands preserving one of Melanesia's most vibrant traditional cultures, with active shell-money economies, ceremonial dance festivals, and the extraordinary practice of shark-calling. Must-dos include witnessing a traditional dance performance, learning about shell-money production, and snorkeling the healthy coral reefs. Visit May to October for calm seas, accessible via expedition cruise ship.

Champagne Bay is a world-famous beach on Vanuatu's Espiritu Santo island, where volcanic gas bubbles fizz up through crystal-clear shallows along a crescent of white sand backed by coconut palms. Must-dos include swimming in the naturally effervescent shallows, tasting freshly grilled coconut crab and lap-lap cooked in earth ovens, and visiting the nearby Blue Holes for freshwater swimming. Visit May through October during the dry season for the most comfortable conditions.
Ambrym is a volcanic island in Vanuatu where two active volcanoes maintain glowing lava lakes and the local culture preserves powerful masked dances and sorcery traditions found nowhere else in Melanesia. Must-dos include trekking to the volcanic caldera, witnessing a Rom dance ceremony, and tasting the island's famously potent kava. The dry season (May–October) offers the best conditions for volcano viewing and cultural encounters.

Lautoka, Fiji's "Sugar City," is a characterful western Viti Levu port where a century-old sugar mill, a vibrant municipal market, and lush botanical gardens reveal an unhurried South Pacific authenticity. Visitors should taste kokoda and lovo-smoked pork at the waterfront market and explore the nearby Yasawa Islands or Taveuni's rainforest waterfalls. The dry season from May through October offers the most comfortable cruising conditions, with warm days, low humidity, and calm seas ideal for shore excursions.
