4. Day 4

   Bad Schandau

   Germany

Bad Schandau is the elegant spa town gateway to Saxon Switzerland National Park, where a 1904 cliff-face elevator and Jugendstil villas provide civilized access to Central Europe's most dramatic sandstone scenery. Visit April through October via Viking's Elbe itineraries for the Schrammsteine rock formations, Toskana Therme post-hike spa recovery, and the Romantic-era landscapes that inspired Caspar David Friedrich.

5. Day 5

   Dresden

   Germany

Dresden, an elegant port city in Saxony, is celebrated for its baroque architecture and rich cultural heritage. Must-do experiences include visiting the stunning Frauenkirche and sampling local delicacies like Dresdner Stollen. The best season to visit is during the spring or fall when the weather is mild and the city buzzes with vibrant festivals and events.

6. Day 6

   Meissen

   Germany

Meissen is a thousand-year-old porcelain town on the Elbe River in Saxony, Germany, where the Albrechtsburg castle, Gothic cathedral, and the world's oldest porcelain manufactory crown a hilltop above cobblestone lanes and rare Saxon vineyards. Visitors should not miss a guided tour of the Meissen porcelain workshop and a tasting of Goldriesling wine on the market square beneath the porcelain-bell carillon. The ideal season to visit is late spring through early autumn, when the vineyard terraces are lush and river cruising conditions on the Elbe are at their finest.

7. Day 7

   Wittenberg

   Germany

Wittenberge is a quietly compelling Elbe River port in Brandenburg's Prignitz region, where a thirteen-century medieval heritage meets reimagined industrial architecture and pristine biosphere landscapes. Visitors should not miss the Steintorturm and Uhrenturm clock tower, and a riverside meal of pan-fried Zander with linseed oil is essential. The optimal season for a river cruise call is May through October, when long northern daylight illuminates the Elbe promenade and surrounding wildflower meadows at their most resplendent.

8. Day 8

   Potsdam

   Germany

Potsdam is the former Prussian royal capital on the Havel River, home to the UNESCO-listed Sanssouci Palace and park — Frederick the Great's rococo masterpiece surrounded by 300 hectares of manicured gardens. Must-dos include touring the palace interiors, visiting the Cecilienhof where the Potsdam Conference shaped post-war Europe, and exploring the charming Dutch Quarter. May through October offers the best weather for enjoying the expansive palace grounds.

9. Day 9

   Warnemunde

   Germany

Warnemünde is a beguiling Baltic seaside town at the mouth of the Warnow — at once a historic fishing port documented since 1195, an East German nostalgic resort beloved for its endless sandy beach and candy-striped lighthouse, and the maritime gateway to the proud Hanseatic city of Rostock just minutes away. The broad promenade, traditional Strandkörbe wicker beach chairs, and lively harbor-front fish restaurants give the town an unhurried, timeless character quite distinct from Germany's busier North Sea resorts. Summer is the prime season, when the Baltic's mild waters warm for swimming and the Rostock sailing regatta brings vibrant nautical pageantry to the harbor.
