Viking Ocean Cruises

Daily Itinerary

1. Day 1

   Duluth, Minnesota, United States

   United States

Duluth, Minnesota, commands the western tip of Lake Superior with its iconic Aerial Lift Bridge, revitalized Canal Park district, and miles of scenic lakefront. Visitors should watch ore ships navigate the harbor canal, taste wild rice soup, and drive the North Shore to Gooseberry Falls. June through October is ideal for cruising, with September's fall colors providing a spectacular backdrop.

2. Day 2

   Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada

   Canada

Thunder Bay is the gateway to Lake Superior's north shore, where the Sleeping Giant mesa, Fort William's living fur trade history, and one of Canada's finest Indigenous art collections await at the head of the world's largest freshwater lake. Visit July through August via Seabourn or Viking for cliff-edge boreal hiking, the Terry Fox Memorial, and access to the most powerful freshwater landscape in the Americas.

3. Day 3

   Silver Islet, Ontario, Canada

4. Day 4

   Soo Locks Transit

5. Day 4

   Sault Sainte Marie, USA

   United States

Sault Ste. Marie sits at the famous Soo Locks, where massive Great Lakes freighters are lifted between Lake Superior and Lake Huron—handling more tonnage annually than the Panama and Suez canals combined. Must-dos include watching the 1,000-foot ships pass through the locks, tasting a traditional Upper Peninsula pasty, and visiting Tahquamenon Falls State Park. June–September offers the busiest shipping traffic and best weather, while autumn brings spectacular northern Michigan foliage.

6. Day 5

   Mackinac Island, Michigan, United States

   United States

Mackinac Island is a car-free Victorian treasure in Michigan's Lake Huron, where horse-drawn carriages, the iconic Grand Hotel, and century-old fudge shops preserve an atmosphere of unhurried elegance. Visitors should not miss a carriage tour past Arch Rock and Fort Mackinac, followed by planked whitefish at a harborside tavern. The island is most enchanting from mid-June through September, when the Lilac Festival gives way to warm summer days perfect for cycling the eight-mile shoreline loop.

7. Day 6

   Door Peninsula

   United States

Door Peninsula is Wisconsin's scenic seventy-five-mile thumb of land extending into Lake Michigan, where cherry orchards, Scandinavian-heritage fish boils, and eleven charming villages create an unexpected coastal paradise. Visit from late May through October for summer theater, lighthouse tours, and spectacular autumn foliage reflected in crystal-clear Great Lakes waters.

8. Day 7

   Alpena, Michigan, United States

   United States

Alpena is a small Michigan city atop the Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary, where over two hundred shipwrecks lie preserved in Lake Huron's cold, clear waters — some with masts still standing after more than a century. Visit July through August via Viking's Great Lakes itineraries for glass-bottom boat encounters with 'Shipwreck Alley,' maritime heritage exhibits, and one of North America's most remarkable underwater archaeological treasures.

9. Day 8

   Georgian Bay (Killarney), Ontario, Canada

10. Day 9

Georgian Bay (Frazer Bay), Ontario, Canada

11. Day 10

    Fathom Five National Marine Park

12. Day 11

    Detroit

    United States

Detroit, America's Motor City on the strait between Lakes Erie and Huron, is experiencing a remarkable renaissance with restored Art Deco landmarks, a world-class art museum, and the birthplace of Motown. Must-dos include the Diego Rivera murals at the DIA, the Motown Museum, and sampling Detroit-style pizza. May through October offers the best weather for exploring the revitalized riverfront.

13. Day 12

    Cleveland

    United States

Cleveland is a resurgent Great Lakes city offering world-class culture, including the free Cleveland Museum of Art, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and one of the world's finest orchestras. Visitors should explore the historic West Side Market, taste a Polish Boy, and stroll the revitalized lakefront. May through October provides the best weather, with autumn colours in nearby Cuyahoga Valley National Park rivalling New England.

14. Day 13

    Port Colborne, Ontario

    Canada

Port Colborne guards the southern gateway of the Welland Canal where it meets Lake Erie, offering the rare spectacle of ocean-going vessels rising through Lock 8 at eye level. Must-dos include watching ships transit the canal, swimming at Nickel Beach's white sands, and sampling legendary Lake Erie perch. Visit from June through September for ideal weather, canal festivals, and easy day trips to Niagara Falls and wine country.

15. Day 14

Welland Canal & Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada

16. Day 15

    Toronto, Canada

    Canada

Toronto is Canada's most multicultural metropolis, where over 200 languages, the ROM's Libeskind crystal, Frank Gehry's AGO redesign, and neighborhoods spanning every cuisine on Earth create one of North America's most rewarding and underestimated cities. Visit September via Viking for the Toronto International Film Festival, waterfront island escapes, and the revelation that Canada's financial capital harbors cultural diversity rivaling any city on the continent.
