Viking Ocean Cruises

Daily Itinerary

1. Day 1

   Toronto, Canada

   Canada

Toronto is Canada's most multicultural metropolis, where over 200 languages, the ROM's Libeskind crystal, Frank Gehry's AGO redesign, and neighborhoods spanning every cuisine on Earth create one of North America's most rewarding and underestimated cities. Visit September via Viking for the Toronto International Film Festival, waterfront island escapes, and the revelation that Canada's financial capital harbors cultural diversity rivaling any city on the continent.

2. Day 2

   Ella

   Sri Lanka

Ella is a serene hill-country village in Sri Lanka's tea-covered central highlands, famous for the spectacular Colombo-to-Badulla railway, the iconic Nine Arch Bridge, and panoramic hiking trails. Must-dos include riding the highland train, touring a tea factory, and hiking Little Adam's Peak for 360-degree mountain views. January through March and July through September offer the clearest weather between monsoon seasons.

3. Day 3

   Niagara Falls, Ontario

   Canada

Niagara Falls is one of the world's most powerful natural spectacles, with Horseshoe Falls thundering 750,000 gallons per second over a 57-meter cliff best viewed from the Canadian side. Must-dos include Journey Behind the Falls, wine tasting along the Niagara Escarpment, and the charming town of Niagara-on-the-Lake with its Shaw Festival theater. June through August offers peak water flow and warmest weather.

4. Day 4

   Cleveland, Ohio, United States

   United States

Cleveland is a reinvented Great Lakes city where world-class cultural institutions—the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, the free Cleveland Museum of Art, and the Cleveland Orchestra—meet a booming food scene anchored by the historic West Side Market. Must-dos include exploring University Circle's museums, dining in Ohio City, and hiking through the nearby Cuyahoga Valley National Park. Late May through September is the prime season for lakefront festivals and Great Lakes cruising.

5. Day 5

   Detroit

   United States

Detroit, America's Motor City on the strait between Lakes Erie and Huron, is experiencing a remarkable renaissance with restored Art Deco landmarks, a world-class art museum, and the birthplace of Motown. Must-dos include the Diego Rivera murals at the DIA, the Motown Museum, and sampling Detroit-style pizza. May through October offers the best weather for exploring the revitalized riverfront.

6. Day 6

   Alpena, Michigan, United States

   United States

Alpena is a small Michigan city atop the Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary, where over two hundred shipwrecks lie preserved in Lake Huron's cold, clear waters — some with masts still standing after more than a century. Visit July through August via Viking's Great Lakes itineraries for glass-bottom boat encounters with 'Shipwreck Alley,' maritime heritage exhibits, and one of North America's most remarkable underwater archaeological treasures.

7. Day 7

   Door Peninsula

   United States

Door Peninsula is Wisconsin's scenic seventy-five-mile thumb of land extending into Lake Michigan, where cherry orchards, Scandinavian-heritage fish boils, and eleven charming villages create an unexpected coastal paradise. Visit from late May through October for summer theater, lighthouse tours, and spectacular autumn foliage reflected in crystal-clear Great Lakes waters.

8. Day 8

   Mackinac Island, Michigan, United States

   United States

Mackinac Island is a car-free Victorian treasure in Michigan's Lake Huron, where horse-drawn carriages, the iconic Grand Hotel, and century-old fudge shops preserve an atmosphere of unhurried elegance. Visitors should not miss a carriage tour past Arch Rock and Fort Mackinac, followed by planked whitefish at a harborside tavern. The island is most enchanting from mid-June through September, when the Lilac Festival gives way to warm summer days perfect for cycling the eight-mile shoreline loop.

9. Day 9

   Ontario

   Canada

Ontario stretches from Toronto's cosmopolitan waterfront through Niagara's wine country and waterfalls to the vast wilderness of the Canadian Shield. Must-dos include tasting icewine in Niagara-on-the-Lake, cruising the Thousand Islands, and exploring Toronto's world-class museums and multicultural food scene. July and August offer warmth, while September and October deliver legendary fall foliage.

10. Day 10

    Georgian Bay

11. Day 11

    Georgian Bay

12. Day 12

    Sault Sainte Marie, USA

    United States

Sault Ste. Marie sits at the famous Soo Locks, where massive Great Lakes freighters are lifted between Lake Superior and Lake Huron—handling more tonnage annually than the Panama and Suez canals combined. Must-dos include watching the 1,000-foot ships pass through the locks, tasting a traditional Upper Peninsula pasty, and visiting Tahquamenon Falls State Park. June–September offers the busiest shipping traffic and best weather, while autumn brings spectacular northern Michigan foliage.

13. Day 12

    Scenic Cruising: Soo Locks Transit

14. Day 13

    Silver Islet, Ontario, Canada

    Canada

Silver Islet is a tiny heritage community on Ontario's Sibley Peninsula where an extraordinary silver mine operated beneath Lake Superior from 1868 to 1884. Must-dos include exploring the historic cottages, hiking Sleeping Giant Provincial Park for dramatic mesa views, and hearing the mine's remarkable story at the old general store. July and August offer the warmest conditions on Superior's north shore.

15. Day 14

    Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada

    Canada

Thunder Bay is the gateway to Lake Superior's north shore, where the Sleeping Giant mesa, Fort William's living fur trade history, and one of Canada's finest Indigenous art collections await at the head of the world's largest freshwater lake. Visit July through August via Seabourn or Viking for cliff-edge boreal hiking, the Terry Fox Memorial, and access to the most powerful freshwater landscape in the Americas.

16. Day 15

    Duluth, Minnesota, United States

    United States

Duluth, Minnesota, commands the western tip of Lake Superior with its iconic Aerial Lift Bridge, revitalized Canal Park district, and miles of scenic lakefront. Visitors should watch ore ships navigate the harbor canal, taste wild rice soup, and drive the North Shore to Gooseberry Falls. June through October is ideal for cruising, with September's fall colors providing a spectacular backdrop.
