Nestled on the southern shore of the Königssee in the Bavarian Alps, Schönau am Königssee has served as the gateway to one of Germany's most dramatic Alpine landscapes since the Wittelsbachs first declared these mountains a royal hunting preserve in the sixteenth century. The village itself is a confection of timber-framed guesthouses and onion-domed churches, but its true magnificence lies in the lake it borders — a fjord-like body of water so clean that it has been designated Germany's cleanest lake for over a century.
The character of Schönau is inseparable from the Königssee. Flanked by near-vertical mountain walls that rise over a thousand metres from the waterline, the lake stretches eight kilometres into the heart of Berchtesgaden National Park. Electric boats — mandated since 1909 to preserve the lake's purity — glide silently across water so transparent that the rocky bottom remains visible at depths of twenty metres. At the famous echo point, the boatman stops to play a trumpet against the cliff face, and the sound returns in cascading reverberations that seem to multiply with each reflection.
Bavarian Alpine cuisine reaches its most authentic expression in Schönau's traditional Gasthäuser. Freshly smoked trout from the Königssee is the signature dish — rich, delicate, and served simply with horseradish and dark rye bread. Hearty Kaiserschmarrn, the torn pancake dusted with powdered sugar and accompanied by plum compote, makes an indulgent afternoon treat. Local breweries produce crisp Helles lagers that taste best consumed on a sun-dappled terrace with the Watzmann massif filling the horizon.
The pilgrimage church of St. Bartholomä, accessible only by boat, is Schönau's most iconic landmark — its red onion domes rising against a backdrop of sheer limestone cliffs and dense forest. Beyond the church, hiking trails lead to the Eiskapelle, a permanent ice formation at the base of the Watzmann's east face, and to the Obersee, a hidden upper lake of almost supernatural beauty. The Jenner cable car lifts visitors to panoramic viewpoints encompassing the lake, the national park, and on clear days, the distant peaks of Austria's Hohe Tauern.
Schönau is accessible by bus from Berchtesgaden, which connects by rail to Munich and Salzburg. River cruise itineraries on the Danube sometimes include overland excursions here. The summer months from June to September offer the warmest weather and longest operating hours for boats and cable cars, though autumn brings spectacular foliage and thinner crowds.
