Long before Fortaleza became Brazil's fifth-largest city, the Mucuripe coastline was the domain of jangadeiros — fishermen who pushed their flat-bottomed rafts through the equatorial surf each dawn, navigating by stars and currents in a tradition stretching back centuries to the indigenous Tupi peoples. The Dutch built the first fortress here in 1649, naming it Schoonenborch, before the Portuguese reclaimed it and rechristened the settlement Fortaleza de Nossa Senhora da Assunção. That military outpost has since blossomed into a sprawling metropolis of over 2.5 million souls, yet the jangadas still dot the horizon at sunrise — a living thread connecting the modern capital of Ceará to its elemental past.

Known as the "City of Light" for its staggering 2,800 hours of annual sunshine, Fortaleza radiates an energy that is distinctly northeastern Brazilian — warmer, more languid, and more rhythmically infectious than the country's southern capitals. The beachfront stretches endlessly in both directions: east along the Costa Sol Nascente toward fishing villages where life moves to the tempo of the tides, and west along the Costa Sol Poente where pristine dunes cascade into lagoons of startling turquoise. Praia do Futuro, the city's most beloved strand, pulses with barracas — thatched beach bars serving fresh coconut water and grilled lobster while forró bands play accordion-driven melodies that coax even the most reluctant dancer to their feet.

The culinary landscape of Fortaleza is a revelation. Carne de sol — sun-dried beef served with creamy manteiga de garrafa (clarified butter) and farofa — anchors the regional kitchen, while the seafood is extraordinary: moqueca cearense, a lighter cousin of the Bahian version, simmers fresh fish in tomatoes and cilantro without the heavy coconut milk. The Mercado Central, a labyrinthine market hall near the old cathedral, overflows with cashew nuts, rapadura sweets, handmade lace, and bottles of cachaça flavored with local fruits. At Praia de Iracema, the revitalized beachfront district named for the indigenous heroine of José de Alencar's famous novel, sidewalk cafes and craft cocktail bars hum until late into the tropical night.

Beyond the city limits, the Ceará coastline unfolds into some of Brazil's most dramatic scenery. Jericoacoara, a former fishing village three hours west, is now a world-class wind and kite-surfing destination set among towering dunes and mangrove lagoons. Canoa Quebrada, to the east, offers terracotta cliffs carved by wind into otherworldly formations above a crescent beach. The dune buggying circuit along the Litoral Leste — skidding across shifting sands and plunging into freshwater lagoons — is among the most exhilarating half-day excursions available from any cruise port in South America.

Fortaleza is served by Oceania Cruises and Seabourn on South American and transatlantic repositioning itineraries, with ships typically docking at the Terminal Marítimo de Fortaleza near the historic center. The city pairs naturally with other Brazilian ports including Buzios and Porto Seguro. The ideal visiting window runs from July through December, when the trade winds moderate the heat and rainfall is minimal, though Fortaleza's equatorial position ensures warm, swimworthy conditions year-round.
