Established in 1885 as Canada's first national park — and the third in the world — Banff occupies a throne room of the Canadian Rockies so grand in scale that even a century of tourism has barely diminished its capacity to astonish. The park's 6,641 square kilometres encompass glaciated peaks, turquoise lakes of almost absurd beauty, deep canyons, hot springs, and some of the most spectacular mountain scenery on the planet. It is the crown jewel of the Canadian Rocky Mountain Parks UNESCO World Heritage Site, and it earns that designation with every sunrise over the Valley of the Ten Peaks.

The town of Banff itself, nestled in the Bow Valley beneath the watchful gaze of Mount Rundle and Cascade Mountain, has evolved from a Victorian railway resort into a sophisticated mountain community that balances conservation mandates with the expectations of four million annual visitors. Banff Avenue buzzes with outdoor outfitters, galleries, and restaurants, while the Fairmont Banff Springs Hotel — the "Castle in the Rockies" — presides over the Bow River gorge with the theatrical grandeur that only a 135-year-old railway hotel can muster.

The culinary scene in Banff has matured dramatically. The Bison Restaurant champions a "Rocky Mountain cuisine" built on Alberta bison, elk, and wild boar, prepared with techniques that honour both indigenous traditions and modern gastronomy. Eden at the Rimrock Resort delivers fine dining with panoramic mountain views, while casual spots like Park Distillery serve house-made spirits alongside campfire-inspired comfort food. The growing emphasis on locally sourced ingredients — trout from Bow River, honey from foothill apiaries, saskatoon berries from the prairies — gives Banff dining an authenticity that transcends resort-town cliché.

The park's iconic experiences read like a greatest-hits of mountain tourism: the Icefields Parkway, a 232-kilometre drive consistently ranked among the world's most scenic roads; Lake Louise, whose jade-green waters beneath Victoria Glacier have graced a million postcards; Moraine Lake, whose turquoise perfection in the Valley of the Ten Peaks once adorned the Canadian twenty-dollar bill; and the Banff Gondola, which whisks visitors to the summit of Sulphur Mountain for 360-degree panoramas encompassing six mountain ranges.

Banff is accessible from Calgary International Airport (approximately ninety minutes west by car or shuttle). The park is spectacular year-round: summer (June-September) offers hiking, wildlife watching, and lake visits; winter (November-April) delivers world-class skiing at three resorts within the park. Shoulder seasons — May and October — offer thinner crowds and remarkable light. Wildlife is ever-present: elk graze on the Banff Springs golf course, bighorn sheep navigate impossible cliff faces, and grizzly bears patrol the backcountry meadows. The park entry fee supports conservation of a landscape that defines the Canadian identity.
