Nestled at the head of Pangnirtung Fjord on the southeastern coast of Baffin Island, the community of Pangnirtung—affectionately known as "Pang" to Canadians—sits at the gateway to Auyuittuq National Park, whose Inuktitut name translates with bone-dry Arctic honesty as "the land that never melts." This Inuit hamlet of approximately fifteen hundred residents occupies one of the most dramatic settings of any community in the Canadian Arctic: steep-walled mountains rise directly behind the settlement, the fjord extends toward Cumberland Sound, and the landscape speaks of geological forces operating on a scale that makes human presence feel both courageous and temporary.

Pangnirtung's character is shaped by the creative resilience of its Inuit community. Despite its remote location—accessible only by air or, during the brief ice-free season, by sea—Pang has developed an internationally recognized arts scene. The Uqqurmiut Centre for Arts and Crafts produces the distinctive Pangnirtung prints and tapestries that are exhibited and collected worldwide, their designs drawing from Inuit mythology, Arctic wildlife, and the daily experience of life in one of Earth's most extreme environments. The community's weavers create tapestries of remarkable sophistication on looms introduced in the 1970s, blending traditional Inuit imagery with textile techniques to produce works that bridge cultures with rare eloquence.

Traditional food culture in Pangnirtung revolves around the harvest from land and sea that has sustained Inuit in this region for millennia. Arctic char, abundant in the fjord and surrounding waters, is the community's most important food fish—eaten raw (frozen and sliced as quaq), dried on racks in the summer wind, or smoked over slow fires. Caribou and ringed seal provide essential protein and fat, while narwhal, occasionally harvested under carefully managed community quotas, yields muktuk that is considered a delicacy and an important cultural touchstone. The annual char fishing season transforms the community, as families gather at the weirs that have been used for generations.

Auyuittuq National Park, accessible from Pangnirtung via a boat ride across the fjord, protects a landscape of almost hallucinatory Arctic grandeur. The Akshayuk Pass, a glacially carved valley flanked by sheer granite walls rising over a thousand meters, provides one of the world's most dramatic hiking experiences—the Penny Ice Cap, a remnant of the last ice age, gleams at the valley's head. Mount Thor, within the park, holds the record for the world's greatest vertical drop—a sheer cliff face of 1,250 meters that draws the world's most ambitious rock climbers. Even for non-hikers, the boat journey up the fjord provides views of hanging glaciers, waterfalls, and Arctic wildlife that make the passage unforgettable.

Seabourn brings its expedition vessel to Pangnirtung, navigating the fjord's deep waters to anchor near the community. Zodiac operations land guests on shores where the arts center, community, and fjord-side walking are all within reach. For expedition travelers who seek destinations where art and landscape exist in mutual inspiration—where the same mountains that produce the world's greatest vertical cliff also inspire tapestries of international acclaim—Pangnirtung offers a Canadian Arctic experience of surprising cultural sophistication within a setting of overwhelming natural power.
