Woody Point sits at the southern entrance to Western Brook Pond in Newfoundland's Gros Morne National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site whose geological significance rivals its visual grandeur. This quiet village of painted clapboard houses on Bonne Bay serves as a gateway to landscapes so geologically extraordinary that they were instrumental in proving the theory of plate tectonics—the Tablelands, a slab of the Earth's mantle thrust up to the surface, looking for all the world like a piece of Mars deposited on the Canadian coast.

The Tablelands are Woody Point's most astonishing natural feature. This flat-topped massif of peridotite—rock from deep within the Earth's mantle—was pushed to the surface when ancient ocean crust collided with the North American continent nearly 500 million years ago. The rock's toxic mineral composition means almost nothing grows on its rust-orange surface, creating an otherworldly landscape of barren slopes and serpentine streams that stands in stark contrast to the lush boreal forest surrounding it. Walking the Tablelands Trail is like traversing another planet, with geological guides explaining how these exposed rocks proved that continents drift across the Earth's surface.

Bonne Bay itself is a spectacular fjord that penetrates deep into the Long Range Mountains, its dark waters reflecting forested slopes and distant peaks. The Discovery Centre in Woody Point offers excellent interpretive exhibits on the region's geology, ecology, and human history, including touch tanks with local marine life and interactive displays explaining how Gros Morne's rocks tell the story of ancient oceans, volcanic islands, and continental collisions. The centre serves as an ideal introduction before venturing into the park's more remote landscapes.

The village preserves the quiet rhythms of outport Newfoundland life. Heritage houses along the waterfront, some dating to the mid-nineteenth century, have been lovingly restored and now serve as inns, galleries, and craft studios. The Gros Morne Theatre Festival stages original Canadian works in an intimate venue, while the annual Writers at Woody Point festival draws literary figures to this remote setting. Local restaurants serve traditional Newfoundland fare—cod tongues, toutons with molasses, and moose stew—alongside more contemporary interpretations of the region's wild foods.

Cruise ships anchor in Bonne Bay with tender service to the government wharf. The park's most popular excursion, the Western Brook Pond boat tour through a landlocked fjord with 600-meter cliffs, requires advance planning but ranks among Canada's greatest natural experiences. The hiking season runs from June through October, with July and August offering the warmest conditions. Woody Point's position at the intersection of geological wonder, fjord scenery, and Newfoundland cultural heritage makes it a port that appeals equally to science enthusiasts, nature lovers, and those seeking authentic Canadian coastal experiences.
