On the northern Pacific coast of Costa Rica's Guanacaste province, Playa Flamingo (also known as Playa Blanca) is one of the few white-sand beaches on the country's Pacific coast — a crescent of pale sand backed by dramatic rocky headlands that frame views across the warm, wildlife-rich waters of the Gulf of Papagayo. This upscale beach community, perched on the arid hillsides above the bay, has developed a reputation as one of Central America's finest sailing and sportfishing destinations, while maintaining the relaxed, nature-focused character that distinguishes Costa Rica from its regional neighbors.

The marine environment off Playa Flamingo is exceptionally productive. The seasonal upwelling of deep, cold water along the Guanacaste coast brings nutrients that drive an extraordinary food chain — from vast schools of baitfish to the billfish, tuna, and wahoo that have made this one of the world's great sportfishing grounds. The Catalinas Islands, visible from the beach on clear days, offer world-class scuba diving with giant Pacific manta rays and bull sharks. Between December and April, humpback whales from the Northern Hemisphere pass through these waters, adding another dimension to the marine spectacle.

The Guanacaste coast surrounding Playa Flamingo offers a succession of beautiful beaches, each with its own character. Playa Conchal, just south of Flamingo, is composed entirely of crushed shells, creating a beach of unique texture and beauty. Playa Grande, to the north, is one of the most important nesting sites for leatherback sea turtles in the eastern Pacific — between October and March, these ancient creatures, some weighing over 500 kilograms, haul themselves onto the sand to lay their eggs in one of nature's most moving spectacles. The Marino Las Baulas National Park protects this nesting beach and offers guided nighttime turtle-watching experiences.

Playas del Flamingo's hillside setting provides views that extend across the bay to the Nicoya Peninsula, and the surrounding tropical dry forest — one of Central America's most endangered ecosystems — supports an array of wildlife that includes howler monkeys, iguanas, and the magnificent scarlet macaws that have been successfully reintroduced to the region. The sunsets, viewed from the hilltop restaurants or from the beach itself, are justifiably famous — the western orientation of the coast provides unobstructed views of the sun descending into the Pacific in displays of color that seem almost theatrical.

Smaller cruise ships and expedition vessels anchor off Playa Flamingo and tender passengers to the beach, while larger vessels may use the port at Playa del Coco, thirty minutes south. The marina at Flamingo accommodates private yachts and sportfishing boats. The dry season from December through April is the prime visiting period, with virtually guaranteed sunshine and the warmest water temperatures. The green season from May through November brings afternoon rain showers but also lush vegetation, dramatic cloud formations, and — from October — the extraordinary leatherback turtle nesting season.
