Omis occupies one of the most dramatic positions on the Croatian coast — wedged into the narrow gorge where the Cetina River breaks through the coastal mountains and empties into the Adriatic, the town is overlooked by sheer limestone cliffs that once served as lookout points for the most feared pirates in the Mediterranean. The Omis pirates — the Kacici and Subici noble families — terrorized Venetian and Papal shipping from the twelfth through the fourteenth centuries, using the river canyon as an impregnable hideout from which to launch raids on passing galleys. Their twin fortresses, Mirabella and Fortica, still crown the cliffs above town.

The old town of Omis strings along the riverbank and seafront in a narrow, atmospheric corridor of stone buildings, churches, and tiny squares. The Church of St. Michael sits at the base of Mirabella fortress, its bell tower offering views across the terracotta rooftops to the sea. The town's annual Klapa Festival, held each July, celebrates the Dalmatian tradition of klapa singing — multi-voice a cappella harmonies, usually performed by men, that carry the emotional weight of centuries of coastal life: love, loss, the sea, and the homeland. The festival is UNESCO-recognized and transforms Omis's stone squares into open-air concert venues of remarkable intimacy.

The Cetina River canyon, stretching 20 kilometers inland from Omis, is one of Croatia's premier adventure destinations. Rafting and canoeing through the canyon takes you past towering limestone walls, through rapids and calm stretches, beneath ancient bridges, and past caves that the pirates once used as warehouses. Zip-lining across the canyon — with lines stretching up to 700 meters — provides an adrenaline perspective on the river's dramatic geology. For those preferring a gentler pace, the river's lower reaches offer swimming in emerald pools fed by cool mountain springs.

The beaches around Omis are among the finest on the Makarska Riviera. The town beach, where the Cetina meets the sea, offers an unusual mix of river and sea swimming. Duce and Pisak, stretching southeast along the coast, provide long pebble beaches backed by pine forest, while the more secluded coves accessible only by boat or footpath from the cliffs above deliver solitude and crystalline water.

Small cruise ships and expedition vessels can anchor in the bay off Omis, with tender service to the town waterfront. The old town is compact and walkable, though reaching the fortresses requires a steep climb — well rewarded by the views. The best visiting season is May through October, with the Klapa Festival in July adding cultural richness to the summer program. Omis is a destination that combines natural drama, historical intrigue, and adventure tourism in a package that is uniquely Croatian — a pirate town that has traded its swords for rafting paddles without losing an ounce of its wild character.
