Ploce

Ploče is a small port city on Croatia's central Dalmatian coast that serves as a strategic gateway to two of the Balkans' most extraordinary destinations—the Neretva River delta, a unique wetland landscape of mandarin orchards and traditional fishing culture, and the pilgrimage town of Medjugorje in neighboring Bosnia and Herzegovina, one of the most visited Marian apparition sites in the Catholic world.

The city occupies a narrow coastal strip between the Adriatic Sea and the steep, limestone mountains of the Dinaric Alps, its port facilities positioned at the mouth of the Neretva—the only significant river to reach the Adriatic on Croatia's long coastline. The Neretva Delta, stretching inland from Ploče, is a landscape unlike anything else on the Croatian coast: a patchwork of channels, wetlands, and fertile alluvial land where mandarin oranges grow in astonishing abundance, their harvest in autumn turning the delta into a sea of orange that rivals any Mediterranean citrus landscape.

The delta's traditional lađa boat culture provides one of the most distinctive excursion experiences on the Croatian coast. Local guides navigate flat-bottomed wooden boats through the labyrinthine channels of the wetland, pointing out herons, egrets, and the occasional otter, while explaining the centuries-old system of agriculture that transforms this watery landscape into productive farmland. The delta's eels, harvested using traditional traps, are a prized local delicacy—served grilled, in brodetto (fish stew), or smoked over aromatic wood in a preparation that has sustained delta communities for generations.

Medjugorje, approximately forty kilometers northeast of Ploče across the Bosnian border, has drawn millions of pilgrims since 1981, when six local teenagers reported visions of the Virgin Mary. Regardless of one's stance on the apparitions—which the Vatican continues to investigate—the pilgrimage town and its surrounding landscape of rocky Herzegovina karst create a powerful atmosphere of devotion and contemplation. The hilltop Apparition Hill, the imposing Cross Mountain, and St. James Church form a triangle of spiritual sites that visitors of all faiths find moving.

Cruise ships dock at Ploče's commercial port, with excursions departing by coach or boat to the Neretva Delta, Medjugorje, and other regional highlights including the walled town of Ston (famous for its oysters and medieval salt pans) and the Pelješac Peninsula's world-class wine country. The Dalmatian climate provides warm, dry conditions from May through October, with September and October offering particularly pleasant temperatures and the added spectacle of the mandarin harvest in the delta. Ploče's position between coast and mountains, between Croatia and Bosnia, between sacred and secular, makes it a port of unusual thematic variety.
