Kotka sits at the mouth of the Kymi River on Finland's southeastern coast, a maritime city of 52,000 whose identity has been shaped by the sea, the river, and the vast forests of Finnish Karelia that stretch northward into the interior. This former fortress town—strategically positioned between Helsinki and the Russian border—has reinvented itself as one of Finland's most pleasant coastal cities, with a combination of maritime parks, an impressive aquarium, and proximity to some of Finland's most beautiful coastal and riverine landscapes.

The city's crown jewel is Sapokka Water Garden, a former quarry transformed into what has been repeatedly voted Finland's most beautiful park. Water cascades through sculpted rock formations, past carefully composed plantings, and into pools that reflect the Finnish sky with mirror-like perfection. The park's design—integrating natural rock, flowing water, and both native and exotic plants—represents Finnish landscape architecture at its finest, and the illuminated evening displays during summer create an atmosphere of enchantment that draws visitors from across Finland.

The Maretarium, Finland's only entirely salt-and-freshwater aquarium, showcases over fifty Finnish fish species in naturalistic habitats that replicate the country's rivers, lakes, and Baltic coastal waters. The facility provides an excellent introduction to Finland's aquatic ecosystems, from the salmon and trout of northern rivers to the Baltic herring and pike that inhabit the surrounding sea. For children and adults alike, the underwater viewing tunnels and touch pools offer engaging encounters with the marine life that has sustained Finnish coastal communities for millennia.

The Kymi River, one of Finland's most important salmon rivers, flows through the city in several branches that create an archipelago of islands. The river's rapids, once harnessed for industrial power, now provide excellent recreational opportunities—the famous Langinkoski rapid, where Russian Tsar Alexander III maintained an Imperial Fishing Lodge, offers a compelling combination of natural beauty and royal history. The lodge, a simple but elegant log cabin where the tsar came to fish for salmon far from the pressures of St. Petersburg, is now a museum that reveals a surprisingly humble side of imperial Russian life.

Cruise ships dock at Kotka's port, with the city center accessible by short walk. The compact urban area is easily explored on foot, with Sapokka Park, the Maretarium, and the maritime center all within comfortable walking distance. Excursions to Langinkoski (ten minutes by road), the Repovesi National Park (one hour, offering dramatic lake and cliff scenery), and the historic Hamina fortress town (thirty minutes) provide variety for full-day visits. The Finnish summer season from June through August offers the warmest weather and longest days, with midsummer bringing near-continuous daylight to this coastal latitude.
