Besançon lies in a dramatic loop of the Doubs River in eastern France, the river curving so tightly around the old town that the city occupies what is effectively a natural peninsula, defended on three sides by water and on the fourth by the citadel that Vauban—Louis XIV's military genius—built on the commanding hilltop above. This combination of natural defenses and engineered fortification made Besançon one of the most impregnable cities in France, and Vauban's citadel, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, remains one of the finest examples of seventeenth-century military architecture in Europe.

The citadel is Besançon's undisputed highlight, occupying eleven hectares of fortified hilltop with commanding views over the city, the Doubs valley, and the Jura Mountains beyond. Within its massive walls, the citadel houses three museums—the Museum of Resistance and Deportation, the Natural History Museum, and the museum of traditional Comtois life—as well as a zoo, insectarium, and aquarium that make it one of the most visited sites in eastern France. The Resistance museum, occupying twenty rooms of the citadel's casemates, provides one of the most powerful and comprehensive examinations of the French Resistance and the Holocaust available anywhere in France.

The old town within the river loop preserves an elegant succession of architectural styles. The Grande Rue, the city's main commercial street since Roman times, is lined with Renaissance mansions whose carved stone facades—featuring elaborate portals, wrought-iron balconies, and interior courtyards—reflect the prosperity that came from Besançon's position on the trade route between the Rhineland and the Mediterranean. The Palais Granvelle, a stunning Renaissance palace built for Nicolas Perrenot de Granvelle, chancellor to Holy Roman Emperor Charles V, now houses the Museum of Time—appropriate for a city that was France's watchmaking capital from the eighteenth century until the quartz revolution shifted the industry to Asia.

The Doubs River defines the city's character and provides its most pleasant public spaces. The riverside quays, redesigned in recent years with wide pedestrian promenades and waterside cafés, offer walks that combine architectural viewing with the calming presence of flowing water. Boat tours navigate the river loop, passing beneath the city's historic bridges and providing perspectives on the old town and citadel that are inaccessible from shore. The river also feeds the city's passion for outdoor recreation—kayaking and canoeing are popular in summer, and the riverside paths connect to extensive cycling networks that extend into the Jura countryside.

River cruise ships and barge-cruises navigate the Doubs and its connecting canals, docking at the city's riverside quays within walking distance of the old town. The citadel is accessible by shuttle, steep footpath, or a pleasant walk through the old town. April through October offers the best weather, with June through September bringing temperatures around 22-26°C and the longest days for exploring both the city and the surrounding Jura Mountains. The region's comté cheese, made from the milk of Montbéliarde cattle pastured on the high Jura meadows, is one of France's greatest artisanal cheeses, and no visit to Besançon is complete without tasting it in its many forms—young and supple, aged and crystalline, or melted in the regional fondue.
