Argostoli wraps around a deep, finger-shaped gulf on the western coast of Kefalonia, the largest of the Ionian Islands and one of the most scenically dramatic in all of Greece. The island achieved global fame as the setting for Louis de Bernières' novel Captain Corelli's Mandolin, but its appeal runs far deeper than literary tourism. Kefalonia is a place of extraordinary geological complexity — underground rivers, sea caves, and disappearing lakes — set against a backdrop of Mount Aenos, whose dark fir forests earned the mountain UNESCO Biosphere Reserve status, and coastlines that plunge into waters of an almost hallucinogenic shade of turquoise.

Argostoli itself is a modern town, rebuilt after the devastating 1953 earthquake that levelled virtually every structure on the island. What emerged from the rubble is a pleasant, sun-washed harbour town with a palm-lined waterfront promenade, a vibrant central market, and the elegant Drapano Bridge — a stone causeway built by the British during their administration of the Ionian Islands in the early nineteenth century. The Korgialenio History and Folklore Museum offers a poignant window into pre-earthquake Kefalonia, with photographs, traditional costumes, and household items salvaged from the ruins. Near the harbour entrance, the Katavothres — mysterious sinkholes where seawater disappears underground — have puzzled geologists for centuries; it was only in 1963 that researchers proved the water travels seventeen kilometres underground before emerging on the island's eastern coast at Melissani Lake.

Kefalonian cuisine is a celebration of the island's agricultural and maritime bounty. The island's signature dish is kreatopita, a savoury meat pie wrapped in a short-crust pastry that combines the minced lamb, rice, and spices of the Venetian-influenced Ionian kitchen. Fresh fish — red mullet, swordfish, and sardines — arrives daily at the harbour, and the tavernas along the Argostoli waterfront grill it simply over charcoal with lemon and oregano. Robola, Kefalonia's famous white wine produced from vineyards on the slopes of Mount Aenos, is crisp, mineral, and increasingly recognised as one of Greece's finest — a glass with grilled octopus at a harbourside table is one of the Ionian Islands' quintessential pleasures.

The natural wonders of Kefalonia justify the journey alone. Myrtos Beach, a crescent of white pebbles embraced by towering limestone cliffs on the island's western coast, is frequently ranked among the most beautiful beaches in the world — the view from the clifftop road above is genuinely breathtaking. Melissani Lake, a subterranean wonder where turquoise water fills a collapsed cave and sunlight streams through an opening in the roof to illuminate the depths, offers ethereal boat rides that feel more like a scene from a fantasy film than a geological attraction. Drogarati Cave, nearby, dazzles with its stalagmites and stalactites and occasionally hosts concerts in its naturally resonant chamber.

Argostoli is a well-served cruise port, welcoming AIDA, Azamara, Celestyal Cruises, Costa Cruises, Holland America Line, MSC Cruises, Marella Cruises, Oceania Cruises, Regent Seven Seas Cruises, and TUI Cruises Mein Schiff. Ships typically dock at or anchor near the harbour, with the town centre and excursion departure points within easy reach. The best time to visit is May through October, with June and September offering the ideal combination of warm weather, swimable seas, and the unhurried rhythm that makes the Ionian Islands one of Greece's most rewarding regions.
