Off the western coast of Greece, where the Ionian Sea meets the mainland in a confusion of channels, causeways, and salt lagoons, the island of Lefkada floats in a state of graceful suspension between island and peninsula. Connected to the Acarnanian coast by a slender bridge that has replaced countless predecessors stretching back to antiquity, Lefkada — also known as Lefkas — was the island from whose white cliffs the poet Sappho is said to have leapt to her death for unrequited love, a legend that has draped this place in romantic mythology for two and a half millennia. Whether or not Sappho made that fatal jump, the cliffs at Cape Lefkatas remain among the most dramatic in the Mediterranean, their pale limestone faces plunging hundreds of feet into water of an almost unbelievable turquoise.

Lefkada's character sets it apart from its more famous Ionian neighbours. While Corfu embraces its Venetian heritage and Kefalonia its Homeric associations, Lefkada offers a rawer, less curated beauty. The island's western coast is scalloped with beaches that routinely appear on lists of the world's finest: Porto Katsiki, accessible only by a long staircase carved into the cliff, reveals a crescent of white pebbles framed by towering white rock and water that graduates from pale jade to deep sapphire. Egremni, until recently reachable only by sea, stretches beneath even taller cliffs. The interior is mountainous and green, with olive groves and cypress forests climbing slopes that reach over 1,100 metres at Mount Stavrota.

Lefkadian cuisine reflects the island's position at the intersection of Ionian and mainland Greek culinary traditions. The local olive oil, pressed from ancient groves that have been cultivated since Venetian times, is among the finest in Greece. Savoro — fried fish marinated in a sauce of rosemary, vinegar, and garlic — is the island's signature dish, a preparation with Venetian roots that speaks to centuries of Italian influence. The tavernas of Nidri and Vassiliki serve fresh catches from the surrounding waters: swordfish, red mullet, and octopus grilled over charcoal and dressed with nothing more than lemon and oil. Local wines from the Vertzami grape, a variety unique to Lefkada, produce robust reds that pair perfectly with the island's grilled meats and rich stews.

From Lefkada, the Ionian archipelago opens outward with easy accessibility. The islands of Meganisi, Kalamos, and Kastos — car-free, unhurried, and largely untouched by mass tourism — are reachable by local ferry or charter boat. Ithaca, the legendary home of Odysseus, lies across the strait and can be visited on a day trip. The nearby mainland coast offers access to ancient Nikopolis, the city founded by Augustus Caesar to celebrate his victory at Actium, and the Ambracian Gulf, a vast enclosed lagoon that supports one of the largest pelican colonies in Europe.

Lefkada is accessible by road from mainland Greece via the causeway bridge, making it the only major Ionian island reachable without a ferry. Charter flights serve the nearby Aktion airport, and regular ferries connect Nidri with the neighbouring islands. The best months to visit are May through October, with June and September offering the ideal balance of warm seas, manageable temperatures, and fewer crowds than the August peak. For those arriving by sea, the marina at Lefkada Town and the anchorages along the eastern coast provide sheltered berths in one of the finest sailing grounds in the Mediterranean.
