Santorini exists because of one of the most violent volcanic eruptions in recorded history. Around 1600 BC, the Minoan eruption — estimated to be four times more powerful than Krakatoa — obliterated the centre of a circular island, creating the crescent-shaped caldera that defines Santorini's dramatic silhouette today. This catastrophe may have inspired Plato's legend of Atlantis and is believed to have contributed to the decline of the Minoan civilization on nearby Crete. The remarkably preserved Bronze Age settlement of Akrotiri, buried under volcanic ash like a Greek Pompeii, was rediscovered in 1967 and reveals a sophisticated society with running water, frescoed walls, and multi-storey buildings.

The visual drama of Santorini is unmatched in the Mediterranean. The villages of Fira and Oia tumble down the inner caldera cliffs in cascades of whitewashed cubic houses, blue-domed churches, and winding stairways carved into the volcanic rock. The caldera itself — a flooded crater eleven kilometres wide — glows in shifting shades of indigo, cobalt, and cerulean, with the dark volcanic islets of Nea Kameni and Palea Kameni brooding at its centre. Oia's sunset, when the sinking sun paints the caldera in shades of rose and amber while hundreds of onlookers applaud from the castle ruins, has become one of the world's most photographed moments.

Santorini's culinary scene draws on volcanic terroir unique in the Greek islands. Assyrtiko wine, grown in low basket-shaped vines called kouloura that protect the grapes from fierce Aegean winds, produces a crisp, mineral white unlike anything else in Greece. Cherry tomatoes, white aubergines, and capers thrive in the volcanic soil, appearing in the classic Santorini salad. Fava, a creamy purée of yellow split peas, is the island's humblest yet most beloved dish, while grilled octopus served with a splash of vinegar on sun-bleached taverna tables remains the quintessential Aegean experience.

Beyond the caldera villages, Santorini rewards exploration. The Red Beach near Akrotiri stuns with its crimson volcanic cliffs plunging into azure water. The ancient city of Thera, perched on the Mesa Vouno ridge, preserves ruins spanning from the ninth century BC through the Roman period. Wine lovers follow the trail of the island's dozen boutique wineries, many offering tastings in caldera-view terraces. A boat excursion to the volcanic hot springs of Nea Kameni, where swimmers wade into sulphurous warm water surrounded by jet-black lava rock, provides a visceral connection to the island's fiery origins.

Santorini is one of the most sought-after cruise ports in the world, with ships anchoring in the caldera and tendering passengers to the old port of Fira. The island welcomes AIDA, Aurora Expeditions, Azamara, Celebrity Cruises, Celestyal Cruises, Costa Cruises, Crystal Cruises, Disney Cruise Line, Emerald Yacht Cruises, Explora Journeys, Hapag-Lloyd Cruises, Holland America Line, Lindblad Expeditions, Marella Cruises, MSC Cruises, Norwegian Cruise Line, Oceania Cruises, P&O Cruises, Ponant, Regent Seven Seas Cruises, Scenic Ocean Cruises, Seabourn, Silversea, Star Clippers, TUI Cruises Mein Schiff, Viking, Virgin Voyages, and Windstar Cruises. Nearby ports include Mykonos, Crete, and Athens. The season runs from April through October, with shoulder months offering fewer crowds and gentler light.
