Of the Northern Sporades islands scattered across the western Aegean, Skiathos is the one that seems to have been designed specifically for the pursuit of pleasure. Just twelve kilometers long and barely six wide, this pine-clad island packs over sixty beaches into its compact coastline — more per square kilometer than perhaps any island in the Mediterranean. Koukounaries, on the southwest coast, is regularly crowned the finest beach in Greece: a perfect crescent of golden sand backed by a forest of Aleppo pines and stone pines whose resinous fragrance mingles with the salt air in an intoxicating Mediterranean perfume.

Skiathos Town, the island's only settlement, wraps around a horseshoe harbor with the picture-perfect composition of a Greek island postcard. Red-roofed white houses climb the hillside in tiers, their balconies spilling with crimson geraniums. The two harbors — the old port for fishing boats and the new port for ferries and yachts — frame a waterfront lined with tavernas, cocktail bars, and shops selling everything from fine jewelry to tourist souvenirs. The Bourtzi peninsula, a small fortified headland separating the two harbors, has been transformed into a pine-shaded cultural venue where outdoor concerts and theater performances are held against the backdrop of the illuminated town.

The island's culinary scene reflects the best of Aegean coastal cooking. Grilled octopus, drizzled with local olive oil and a squeeze of lemon, is practically the national dish of the Sporades. Lobster spaghetti — the island's signature luxury dish — appears on menus from humble harbor tavernas to upscale waterfront restaurants. The local goat cheese, herbs gathered from the pine-scented hillsides, and honey from the island's beehives infuse the cuisine with flavors rooted in the landscape. Tiny family-run tavernas in the hills above town — reachable only by footpath — serve some of the island's best food, accompanied by views over the Aegean that money cannot buy.

Beyond the beaches, Skiathos rewards exploration. The Evangelistria Monastery, founded in 1794 in a forested ravine above the town, is a place of extraordinary serenity — and historical significance, for it was here that the first Greek flag was reportedly woven and raised during the struggle for independence. The Kastro, a dramatic medieval fortress perched on the island's northern tip, is accessible via a hiking trail through pine forests and offers views across to the neighboring islands of Skopelos and Alonnisos. The marine park surrounding the islands — established to protect the endangered Mediterranean monk seal — provides some of the clearest waters for snorkeling in the entire Aegean.

Skiathos Town's harbor can accommodate smaller cruise ships, while larger vessels anchor offshore and tender to the waterfront. The island's compact size makes it easily explorable by bus (a single route connects the town to Koukounaries), water taxi, or rented boat. The season runs from May to October, with July and August bringing the warmest water and the liveliest atmosphere, while June and September offer the ideal balance of warm weather, empty beaches, and affordable tavernas.
