On the remote northern coast of Greenland's Disko Bay region, the tiny settlement of Ukkusissat clings to a rocky shore beneath the vast Greenlandic ice cap, its colourful wooden houses a vivid counterpoint to the monochromatic severity of the Arctic landscape. Mattak — raw narwhal skin and blubber — is considered a delicacy, its crisp outer layer and soft, oily interior providing essential vitamins and fats for Arctic survival. Dried fish, smoked seal meat, and caribou jerky supplement the marine harvest. Crowberries and blueberries, gathered from the tundra during the brief summer, provide the community's primary plant-based nutrition. For visitors, the experience of sharing traditional Greenlandic foods with community members offers a cultural exchange of remarkable intimacy.
The natural environment surrounding Ukkusissat is dramatic. The Disko Bay region is one of the world's great iceberg nurseries — the Ilulissat Icefjord, 70 kilometres to the south, produces icebergs at a rate of approximately 20 billion tonnes per year, and many of these drift northward past Ukkusissat in a slow procession of frozen architecture. Humpback whales feed in the bay during summer, their dramatic breaches visible from the settlement's shore. The midnight sun illuminates the scene from late May through late July, while the northern lights dance across the winter sky.
Ukkusissat is accessible by boat from Ilulissat (approximately four hours) or Uummannaq, and by helicopter when weather permits. Expedition cruise ships on Greenland's west coast itineraries occasionally include the settlement as a Zodiac landing destination. The visiting season runs from late June through September, when sea ice permits navigation. Visitors should approach with cultural sensitivity — this is a living community, not a tourist attraction — and be prepared for basic conditions. The encounter with a community maintaining traditional Inuit lifeways in the 21st century, against a backdrop of icebergs and midnight sun, is among the most authentic cultural experiences available in the Arctic.
