Iceland

Grundarfjordur, Iceland

Grundarfjörður sits on the northern shore of the Snæfellsnes Peninsula — the region Jules Verne chose as the entry point for his Journey to the Centre of the Earth — beneath the Kirkjufell mountain that has become Iceland's most photographed natural feature. This small fishing town of fewer than a thousand residents serves as the gateway to a peninsula so geologically diverse it has earned the nickname 'Iceland in Miniature.'

Kirkjufell, the 'Church Mountain,' rises 463 meters from the shoreline in a conical form so symmetrical it appears sculpted rather than geological. The mountain and its companion waterfall, Kirkjufellsfoss, achieved global fame as a filming location for Game of Thrones, but their photographic appeal predates the show by decades. The mountain's form changes dramatically with viewing angle and season — snow-capped and austere in winter, green and approachable in summer, occasionally wearing a crown of northern lights between September and March.

The Snæfellsnes Peninsula itself compresses Iceland's greatest hits into a seventy-five-kilometer stretch. The Snæfellsjökull glacier-capped volcano anchors the peninsula's western tip, its ice cap visible from Grundarfjörður on clear days. Black sand beaches at Djúpalónssandur hold worn iron relics from a nineteenth-century shipwreck. Lava fields at Berserkjahraun preserve the flows from prehistoric eruptions in moss-covered formations that create an otherworldly landscape. Seal colonies at Ytri Tunga provide wildlife encounters requiring nothing more than a quiet approach and patience.

Aurora Expeditions, Oceania Cruises, Princess Cruises, Seabourn, and Windstar Cruises include Grundarfjörður on Icelandic circumnavigation and North Atlantic itineraries. The town's small harbor, overlooked by Kirkjufell, provides one of the most photogenic arrivals in all of expedition cruising.

June through August offers the mildest weather and endless daylight, while September through March adds the possibility of northern lights at the cost of shorter days and colder temperatures. Grundarfjörður proves that Iceland's most rewarding experiences often come not from the famous Golden Circle but from the quieter corners where a mountain, a waterfall, and a fishing village create a composition of such natural perfection that no embellishment is necessary.
