Matiari

Matiari is a village that reveals Bengal at its most artisanal. Situated on the banks of the Hooghly River — the westernmost distributary of the Ganges as it fans across the delta toward the Bay of Bengal — this small settlement in West Bengal's Nadia district has been renowned for centuries as a center of brasswork and bell-metal craftsmanship. The rhythmic clang of hammers on heated metal echoes through narrow lanes where families have practiced the same techniques for generations, shaping cooking vessels, temple bells, and ornamental wares by hand using methods that predate the industrial revolution.

Arriving by river, Matiari presents a quintessentially Bengali tableau: earthen ghats stepping down to the brown-green water, women washing saris at the river's edge, and the low rooflines of workshops and homes peeking above groves of banana, coconut, and jackfruit trees. The village's fame rests on its metalworkers, who produce everything from massive cooking pots to delicate oil lamps using a combination of casting, hammering, and engraving techniques passed from father to son. Watching a craftsman transform a flat disc of brass into a perfectly proportioned vessel through nothing more than fire, hammer, and practiced intuition is a mesmerizing experience — and a reminder of the skill embedded in India's artisanal traditions.

The cuisine of rural Bengal is one of India's most refined, despite its apparent simplicity. River fish — hilsa (ilish), rohu, and catla — dominate the table, prepared in mustard sauce (shorshe ilish), fried with turmeric and salt (maach bhaja), or simmered in a light broth with vegetables (maacher jhol). Rice, the staple carbohydrate, is served in multiple forms: steamed, puffed (muri), and flattened (chira). Bengali sweets are legendary throughout India — sandesh, rasgulla, and mishti doi (sweetened yogurt) are crafted from fresh chhena (cottage cheese) with a lightness and subtlety that elevate simple ingredients to art. Tea stalls along the riverbank serve milky chai accompanied by shingaras (samosa-like pastries filled with spiced vegetables).

The surrounding region offers river cruise passengers a window into Bengali life that few other itineraries provide. Kalna, accessible by a short sail along the Hooghly, is famed for its remarkable cluster of terracotta temples — 108 Shiva temples arranged in two concentric circles, their brick facades adorned with scenes from Hindu mythology in extraordinary sculptural detail. The colonial town of Chandernagore, a former French settlement, retains European architecture and a promenade along the river. Further upstream, the holy city of Nabadwip — once a center of Sanskrit learning and Vaishnavite philosophy — draws pilgrims to its riverside ghats and ancient temples.

Uniworld River Cruises includes Matiari on its Ganges itineraries, offering passengers the opportunity to visit workshops, interact with artisans, and purchase brass and bell-metal pieces directly from the makers. The ship typically moors at the village ghat, from which the workshops and village center are easily accessible on foot. The best time to visit is October through March, when the post-monsoon weather is cool and clear, the rivers are navigable, and the winter light bathes the Bengali countryside in a warm, golden glow.
