Alghero is the Catalan corner of Sardinia — a medieval walled town on the island's northwestern coast where the street signs are bilingual in Italian and Catalan, the local dialect retains vocabulary from fourteenth-century Barcelona, and the seafood restaurants serve a distinctive cuisine that bridges Sardinia and Catalonia with delicious effect.

The old town, enclosed within honey-colored defensive walls built by the Aragonese in the fourteenth century, projects into the Mediterranean on a rocky promontory. Walking the walls at sunset — with views across the bay to Capo Caccia's dramatic limestone cliffs — ranks among Sardinia's finest experiences. Within the walls, narrow streets lined with coral shops (Alghero was historically the Mediterranean's coral capital), Gothic churches, and restaurants create a compact labyrinth that rewards aimless exploration.

The Neptune's Grotto — Grotta di Nettuno — provides Alghero's most spectacular natural attraction. This sea cave at the base of Capo Caccia's cliffs is accessible either by boat from Alghero's harbor or via the Escala del Cabirol — a dramatic staircase of 656 steps carved into the cliff face. The cave's interior features stalactites, stalagmites, and an underground salt lake of extraordinary beauty, illuminated to reveal formations that have been growing for millions of years.

Explora Journeys, Hapag-Lloyd Cruises, Princess Cruises, Scenic Ocean Cruises, and Silversea include Alghero on western Mediterranean itineraries. The surrounding coastline — the Coral Riviera — provides beaches and diving sites that showcase Sardinia's famously clear waters, while the Nuraghe di Palmavera, a Bronze Age stone fortress just outside town, connects visitors to Sardinia's enigmatic pre-Roman civilization.

May through October provides ideal conditions, with September offering warm seas without summer crowds. Alghero is Sardinia's most culturally distinctive city — a place where medieval Catalan identity persists within Italian sovereignty, where ancient walls meet turquoise waters, and where the Mediterranean diet achieves its most convincing expression in lobster alla catalana served within sound of the sea.
