Hakone's ryokan — traditional inns — serve elaborate kaiseki meals that elevate seasonal ingredients to the level of edible art: freshwater fish from mountain streams, wild vegetables gathered from the forest floor, and tofu prepared with the soft volcanic spring water that gives Hakone cuisine its distinctive character. The Izu Peninsula is renowned for its seafood — kinmedai (golden-eye snapper), ise-ebi (spiny lobster), and the wasabi cultivated in the peninsula's cool, clean streams, considered the finest in Japan. The region's onsen (hot spring) culture adds a sensory dimension to dining: the ritual of bathing in volcanic mineral water before a kaiseki dinner constitutes one of Japan's most refined pleasures.
The park's hot spring heritage connects to a geological story that is still actively unfolding. Hakone's Owakudani valley, where volcanic gases still emerge from sulphurous vents and the famous black eggs — kuro-tamago, hard-boiled in the hot springs until their shells turn black — are sold to visitors who believe each one adds seven years to their lifespan. The Izu Peninsula's geothermal activity powers hundreds of onsen facilities, from luxury resort spas to rustic outdoor rotenburo baths perched on clifftops above the Pacific.
Fuji-Hakone-Izu National Park is accessible from Tokyo by train in under two hours. Cruise passengers calling at Shimizu or Yokohama can reach the park by coach excursion. The climbing season for Mount Fuji runs from July through September, when the mountain trails and summit facilities are open. Spring brings cherry blossoms to the Five Lakes region, autumn transforms the Hakone forests into a tapestry of red and gold, and winter offers the clearest views of Fuji's snow-capped peak. Each season presents a different expression of the relationship between nature, culture, and spirituality that defines Japan's most important national park.
