Micronesia

Kosrae (ex Kusaie)

In the eastern Caroline Islands of Micronesia, Kosrae — formerly known as Kusaie — is the least visited, most pristine, and arguably most beautiful of the Federated States of Micronesia's four major islands. This volcanic island of steep, jungle-covered mountains, mangrove-fringed coastlines, and crystal-clear waters has been called "the sleeping lady" for its mountain profile, which resembles a woman lying on her back — a silhouette that seems to embody the island's atmosphere of unhurried tranquillity.

The character of Kosrae is defined by what has been preserved rather than what has been built. With a population of barely seven thousand and tourism development that amounts to a handful of small lodges and dive operators, the island retains a completeness of natural environment that has vanished from more accessible Pacific destinations. Over ninety percent of Kosrae's land area is covered in tropical forest — primary growth in the mountainous interior, secondary forest and mangroves along the coast — creating an island of almost overwhelming greenness.

The ruins of Lelu, on a small island in Kosrae's harbour, are the remains of a medieval Pacific kingdom that rivalled the better-known Nan Madol on neighbouring Pohnpei. The basalt-walled compound — consisting of royal residences, sacred enclosures, and burial chambers — was the seat of the Tokosra dynasty, which ruled Kosrae for centuries before European contact. The ruins, partially overgrown by tropical vegetation, are less extensively excavated than Nan Madol but equally impressive in their testimony to the engineering and political sophistication of pre-contact Pacific societies.

The diving around Kosrae is considered among the finest in Micronesia. Hard coral coverage approaches one hundred percent on some reef slopes, creating underwater gardens of extraordinary colour and complexity. The island's relative isolation from commercial fishing pressure means that marine life is abundant — schools of barracuda, grey reef sharks, eagle rays, and the occasional hammerhead shark patrol the outer reefs. The wreck of a Japanese supply ship from World War II provides an additional dive attraction, its hull colonised by corals and serving as an artificial reef.

Kosrae is served by United Airlines' Island Hopper route, which connects Honolulu to Guam via the FSM's major islands — a journey that is itself one of the great aviation adventures of the Pacific. The tropical climate is warm year-round, with the driest months from January to March generally preferred. Accommodation is limited to a few lodges and guesthouses, and the island's infrastructure is modest. Visitors who make the effort to reach Kosrae are rewarded with an experience of Pacific island life that feels authentically unmediated by tourism.
