On the night of 23 January 1904, a devastating fire swept through Ålesund, destroying over eight hundred wooden buildings and leaving ten thousand people homeless in the depths of a Norwegian winter. The reconstruction that followed, completed in just three years with financial aid from Kaiser Wilhelm II of Germany (a regular visitor to the region's fjords), created one of Europe's most remarkable concentrations of Art Nouveau architecture. Turrets, spires, dragon motifs, and floral ornamentation in stone and plaster transform this fishing town's waterfront into an open-air museum of Jugendstil design — a Nordic interpretation of the international movement that drew inspiration from Norwegian fairy tales, Viking mythology, and the organic forms of the surrounding natural landscape.

Ålesund occupies a series of islands at the mouth of the Storfjord, giving it a dramatic setting of harbour channels, bridges, and waterfront promenades backed by distant snow-capped mountains. The town centre clusters on the islands of Aspøya and Nørvøya, connected by bridges and framing a narrow canal that fills with fishing boats and pleasure craft. The Aksla viewpoint, reached by climbing 418 steps from the town park, rewards the effort with one of Norway's great panoramas — a bird's-eye view of the Art Nouveau rooftops, the island-studded coastline, and the Sunnmøre Alps rising from the fjord. The Jugendstilsenteret (Art Nouveau Centre), housed in a beautifully restored 1905 pharmacy, provides context for the architectural treasures that surround it.

Norwegian coastal cuisine reaches refined heights in Ålesund. Klippfisk (dried and salted cod), the town's historic export, is prepared in Portuguese-influenced dishes — bacalau à Gomes de Sá, with potatoes and olives, is a local favourite. Fresh Atlantic cod, haddock, and halibut appear simply grilled or in creamy fish soups. The town's proximity to rich fishing grounds means that king crab, lobster, and scallops are reliably fresh. For a unique Ålesund experience, visit the Molja Lighthouse, a harbour restaurant set in a functioning lighthouse, where seafood is served with views of the fishing fleet returning at dusk. Brown cheese (brunost), that peculiarly Norwegian caramel-sweet whey cheese, accompanies breakfast waffles throughout the region.

The fjord landscape surrounding Ålesund is among Norway's most spectacular. The Geirangerfjord, a UNESCO World Heritage Site reached by a two-hour drive over mountain passes, is flanked by waterfalls — the Seven Sisters and the Suitor — cascading hundreds of metres into emerald water. The Hjørundfjord, less visited but equally beautiful, penetrates deep into the Sunnmøre Alps and is accessible by a scenic ferry. Bird Island (Runde), home to half a million seabirds including puffins, gannets, and kittiwakes, lies a short boat ride south. The Atlantic Road, a highway linking islands via eight bridges over open sea, is considered one of the world's most beautiful drives.
