In one of the innermost recesses of the Hardangerfjord — Norway's second-longest fjord and the setting that inspired Edvard Grieg's most lyrical compositions — the barony of Rosendal occupies a microclimate of such improbable mildness that fruit orchards, rose gardens, and deciduous woodlands flourish at a latitude where one might expect only spruce and stone. The manor house, built in 1665 and remarkably well preserved, offers a window into the aristocratic life of rural Norway during the centuries when the country was governed from Copenhagen. The interiors display period furniture, tapestries, and family portraits spanning ten generations of baronial residence, while the library houses a collection of rare books and manuscripts that reflect the scholarly interests of the barony's most cultivated inhabitants. The surrounding landscape garden, redesigned in the English romantic style in the 19th century, cascades down to the fjord shore through a sequence of water features, woodland walks, and viewpoints that frame the Hardangerfjord and the Folgefonna glacier beyond — one of the mainland Norway's largest ice caps, whose blue-white expanse is visible from the garden terraces on clear days.

The Hardanger region is known as Norway's orchard country, and Rosendal sits at its heart. The combination of deep fjord waters, sheltered valleys, and reflected sunlight creates conditions that support apple, pear, plum, and cherry production — an agricultural tradition that dates back to the monastic orchards of the medieval period.
