Stokmarknes occupies a special place in Norwegian maritime history: it is the birthplace of the Hurtigruten coastal express, founded here in 1893 by Captain Richard With, who established the first regular steamship route connecting the isolated communities of Norway's northern coast. The town sits on Hadseløya island in the Vesterålen archipelago, a less dramatic but equally enchanting neighbor to the Lofoten Islands to the south. While Lofoten captures the imagination with its jagged peaks, Vesterålen offers gentler landscapes — rolling moorland, sheltered fjords, and one of the world's highest concentrations of sea eagles.

The Hurtigruten Museum is the town's cultural centerpiece, housed partly within the hull of the retired MS Finnmarken. The museum chronicles the 130-year history of the coastal express service that has been a lifeline for northern Norway. Stokmarknes is a modest town of about 3,300 people, its harbor surrounded by fish-drying racks and brightly painted wooden houses. The midnight sun illuminates the Vesterålen peaks from late May through July.

Arctic seafood dominates the local cuisine. Skrei, the migratory Arctic cod, is prized for its firm, white flesh and is served pan-fried with brown butter and boiled potatoes. Stockfish, air-dried on the town's wooden racks, has been northern Norway's most important trade good for a thousand years. Whale steak, seared rare with lingonberry sauce, divides opinion but remains part of the local food culture.

Vesterålen's chief attraction is its extraordinary wildlife. Whale-watching excursions from nearby Andenes offer near-guaranteed sightings of sperm whales. Sea eagle safaris depart from Stokmarknes harbor. The scenic drive south through Sortland to the Lofoten Islands traverses bridges and tunnels linking island to island across cerulean straits.

Stokmarknes is served by Hapag-Lloyd Cruises, Hurtigruten, and HX Expeditions. Hurtigruten ships including MS Nordkapp, MS Polarlys, MS Richard With, and MS Nordnorge call daily. The summer months of June through August offer midnight sun, while winter brings the northern lights.
