Trondheim, founded as Nidaros by the Viking king Olav Tryggvason in 997 AD, served as Norway's first capital and remains the spiritual heart of the nation. The Nidaros Cathedral, Scandinavia's largest medieval building, was erected over the burial site of Saint Olav, the king who Christianised Norway and was martyred at the Battle of Stiklestad in 1030. For centuries, the cathedral served as the coronation church of Norwegian kings, and its west facade — a symphony of Gothic sculpture depicting biblical scenes and Norwegian saints — ranks among the finest examples of ecclesiastical architecture in Northern Europe. Even today, the cathedral draws pilgrims who walk the ancient Saint Olav's Way from Oslo, a five-hundred-kilometre journey through mountain and forest.

Trondheim's food scene has gained national recognition. Bacalao — a legacy of the city's centuries-old stockfish trade with Portugal — is prepared in countless variations. Fresh Atlantic salmon, whether smoked, cured as gravlaks, or simply grilled, showcases the region's pristine waters. Sveler, thick Norwegian pancakes served with sour cream and jam, are a beloved afternoon snack. The city's restaurant scene has matured considerably, with several establishments earning accolades for their creative use of foraged herbs, Arctic seafood, and traditional preservation techniques. Baklandet Skydsstation, set in an eighteenth-century coaching inn, offers traditional Norwegian fare in one of the city's most atmospheric settings.

From Trondheim, excursions reach into the heart of Norwegian nature and history. The Stiklestad National Cultural Centre, where Saint Olav fell in battle, lies an hour northeast and hosts an annual Viking festival and outdoor passion play. The Trollheimen mountain range, accessible from the city, offers superb hiking and cross-country skiing. The island of Munkholmen, a fifteen-minute ferry ride from the harbour, has served successively as a monastery, a prison, and a fortress and is now a popular summer bathing spot. The Trondheim Fjord, Norway's third longest, stretches one hundred and thirty kilometres inland.
