Port Moresby

On the southeastern coast of Papua New Guinea, where the Owen Stanley Range descends through foothills of tropical forest to a harbor of striking natural beauty, Port Moresby is the capital of one of the world's most culturally diverse nations — a country where over 800 languages are spoken across a landscape that ranges from coral atolls to cloud-covered peaks exceeding 4,500 meters. For expedition cruise passengers, this is the gateway to a world of extraordinary cultural complexity and natural wealth that remains one of the last great frontiers of global travel.

Port Moresby's cultural diversity is palpable from the moment of arrival. The city's population, drawn from communities across Papua New Guinea's vast geography, creates a human mosaic of remarkable variety — Highland peoples, Sepik River communities, Island groups, and coastal populations each maintaining distinct languages, artistic traditions, and social structures within the shared space of the capital. The National Museum and Art Gallery provides the most accessible introduction to this diversity, with collections encompassing the carved spirit boards of the Sepik, the elaborate body decoration traditions of the Highlands, the tapa cloth of the coastal peoples, and the maritime traditions of the island communities.

The Kokoda Track, one of the most significant battlefields of World War II, begins its 96-kilometer traverse of the Owen Stanley Range from the outskirts of Port Moresby. In 1942, Australian forces fought a grueling campaign against Japanese troops along this muddy, mountainous trail in some of the most brutal conditions of the Pacific War. The Bomana War Cemetery, just outside the city, maintains the graves of nearly 4,000 Allied servicemen with immaculate care, its manicured lawns and white headstones providing a place of profound reflection.

Nature Conservancy's efforts and the surrounding landscape offer remarkable wildlife encounters. The Varirata National Park, thirty kilometers from the city center, protects a tract of rainforest where birds of paradise — Papua New Guinea's national emblem and one of the most spectacular bird families on Earth — display their extraordinary plumage in morning courtship rituals. The Raggiana bird of paradise, with its cascading orange flank plumes, can be observed performing its elaborate hanging display from special viewing platforms.

Cruise ships dock at Port Moresby's modern commercial port, with organized shore excursions providing the most practical and secure way to experience the city's attractions. Port Moresby has significant security challenges, and independent exploration should be undertaken with caution and local guidance. The dry season from May through October, known locally as the "southeast season," offers the most comfortable conditions — lower humidity, less rainfall, and clearer skies for mountain views and bird watching. The wet season from November through April brings heavy afternoon thunderstorms but also lush vegetation and the flowering seasons that attract many bird species.
