Leixões is the port of Porto — and Porto is one of Europe's most captivating cities. This working harbor serves as the cruise gateway to Portugal's second city, whose UNESCO-listed historic center tumbles down the steep banks of the Douro River in a cascade of granite, azulejo tiles, and dramatic topography.
Porto's Ribeira district, on the Douro's northern bank, is the city's visual heart — a dense quarter of medieval houses and waterfront restaurants overlooking the rabelo boats and port wine lodges of Vila Nova de Gaia. The São Bento railway station, lined with over 20,000 blue-and-white azulejo tiles, provides Porto's most accessible art experience. The Livraria Lello bookshop — whose neo-Gothic interior inspired Hogwarts — and the Clérigos Tower add to the cultural concentration.
Ambassador Cruise Line, Celebrity Cruises, HX Expeditions, Scenic Ocean Cruises, and TUI Cruises dock at Leixões. Porto's francesinha — the signature sandwich of bread, meat, cheese, and spicy sauce — provides sustenance calibrated to the city's hills.
April through October offers the most pleasant conditions, with June's São João festival providing Porto's most exuberant cultural expression.
