Union Island, the southernmost inhabited island in the nation of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, rises from the Caribbean Sea as a volcanic peak that early sailors used as a navigational landmark on the passage between Grenada and Saint Vincent. The island's recorded history stretches back to the pre-Columbian Carib people, followed by centuries of French and British colonial contest before the archipelago achieved independence in 1979. At barely three square miles, Union Island punches far above its weight as a yachting hub and gateway to some of the Caribbean's most pristine marine environments, including the Tobago Cays — a cluster of uninhabited islets enclosed by a horseshoe reef that Jacques Cousteau once described as one of the most beautiful places on Earth.
The island possesses a rugged, untamed beauty quite distinct from the manicured resort islands elsewhere in the Caribbean. Mount Taboi, at just over three hundred metres, dominates the landscape with its cloud-capped peak. Clifton, the main settlement, wraps around a small harbour where fishing boats bob alongside visiting yachts, and colourful rum shops and provision stores line the waterfront road. The pace of life is unhurried; locals greet visitors with genuine warmth, and the absence of mega-resort development preserves an authenticity that increasingly rare in the region. Chatham Bay, on the island's western side, is a secluded crescent of sand reachable only by boat or a rugged hiking trail over the ridge.
Grenadine cuisine draws on the bounty of surrounding waters and the island's tropical gardens. Freshly caught lobster, grilled over open flame and served with garlic butter and lime, is the island's supreme indulgence. Lambi (conch), prepared as a spicy stew or tenderised and fried as fritters, appears on virtually every menu. Callaloo soup, made from dasheen leaves simmered with okra, coconut milk, and salt pork, is a creamy, comforting staple. Fried jackfish with provisions (a medley of root vegetables including breadfruit, yam, and green banana) constitutes a classic Vincentian lunch. A rum punch — dark rum, lime juice, nutmeg, and Angostura bitters over ice — is the essential accompaniment.
The Tobago Cays Marine Park, a short boat ride from Union Island, is the jewel of the southern Grenadines. Five small islands surrounded by crystalline water shelter hawksbill and green sea turtles that glide through the shallows with balletic grace. Snorkelling within the reef reveals parrotfish, brain coral, and nurse sharks resting on the sandy bottom. Mayreau, the smallest inhabited Grenadine, offers the stunning Salt Whistle Bay — consistently rated among the Caribbean's finest beaches. Palm Island and Petit Saint Vincent, ultra-exclusive private island resorts, are visible from Union Island's shores.
Union Island receives calls from MSC Cruises, whose fleet — including MSC Euribia, MSC Fantasia, MSC Grandiosa, and MSC Meraviglia among others — brings the scale of modern cruising to this intimate Caribbean setting. Nearby ports include Bequia, Canouan, and the island of Grenada to the south. The best time to visit is December through May, during the dry season, when northeast trade winds keep temperatures comfortable, the sea is calm, and the risk of hurricanes is nil.
