Alphonse Atoll, Seychelles

Alphonse Atoll lies 400 kilometres southwest of Mahe — far beyond the granitic inner islands that most Seychelles visitors know — in the coral outer islands where the Indian Ocean stretches uninterrupted to the horizon and the reefs harbour some of the most pristine marine ecosystems remaining in the Western Indian Ocean. The atoll comprises Alphonse Island, the tiny St. Francois Island, and the vast St. Francois lagoon — a shallow, turquoise expanse of sand flats and coral gardens that has earned an international reputation as one of the finest fly-fishing destinations on Earth, particularly for the giant trevally, bonefish, and permit that patrol its crystalline shallows.

The marine environment of Alphonse is extraordinary. The outer reef drop-off, where the shallow lagoon gives way to the deep ocean, is patrolled by grey reef sharks, whitetip reef sharks, and the sailfish and marlin that cruise the pelagic zone. Manta rays — with wingspans exceeding four metres — glide through the channels between the reef and the open sea, their graceful movements visible from the surface as dark shadows against the turquoise bottom. Sea turtles — both green and hawksbill — are abundant, nesting on the beaches and feeding on the seagrass that carpets the lagoon floor. The coral health at Alphonse is notably good, having recovered well from the 1998 bleaching event that devastated reefs across the Indian Ocean.

Alphonse Island itself is a small, flat coral island of approximately 174 hectares, covered in coconut palms and casuarina trees. A single eco-lodge operates on the island, limiting the human footprint and ensuring that the surrounding marine environment remains largely undisturbed. The island's conservation program includes turtle monitoring, coral reef surveys, and a partnership with the Islands Development Company that balances the needs of the small resident community with the ecological value of the atoll. Bird life is abundant — white terns, sooty terns, and frigatebirds breed in the tree canopy, while waders — including crab plovers, a species rare elsewhere in the Seychelles — feed on the exposed tidal flats.

The fly-fishing at Alphonse and St. Francois has achieved legendary status among saltwater anglers. The St. Francois lagoon, accessible only by boat from Alphonse, is one of the largest and most productive tidal flats in the Indian Ocean — at low tide, vast expanses of white sand are exposed, and the incoming tide brings giant trevally, bonefish, milkfish, and triggerfish onto the flats in a feeding frenzy that provides sight-fishing opportunities of extraordinary quality. The catch-and-release policy enforced at Alphonse ensures the sustainability of this fishery, and the guides — many of them Seychellois from the outer islands — possess an intimate knowledge of the tides, channels, and fish behaviour that transforms a fishing trip into an ecological education.

Alphonse Atoll is visited by Emerald Yacht Cruises on Seychelles outer island itineraries, with access by Zodiac or tender boat. The most comfortable visiting season is October through May, with the transition months of October-November and March-April offering the calmest seas and best diving conditions. The southeast monsoon from June through September brings stronger winds but also excellent fishing conditions on the exposed flats.
