Port Victoria, on the northeastern coast of Mahé, is the capital of the Seychelles and one of the world's smallest capital cities — a tropical town of just 26,000 people that can be explored on foot in an unhurried morning. Named after Queen Victoria in 1841, the capital retains a colonial-era clock tower modeled on London's Vauxhall Bridge Clock and a botanical garden established in 1901 that showcases the archipelago's extraordinary endemic flora, including the legendary coco de mer palm, whose enormous double coconuts are the largest seeds in the plant kingdom.

The city's Sir Selwyn Selwyn-Clarke Market is the beating heart of Seychellois daily life — a bustling covered market where fishmongers display the morning's catch of tuna, red snapper, job fish, and barracuda on beds of ice, while fruit vendors stack pyramids of breadfruit, jackfruit, star fruit, and the tiny, intensely sweet bananas that grow throughout the islands. The market's upper floor sells spices, vanilla, cinnamon bark, and handmade crafts. Just outside, the narrow streets of the old town reveal Creole architecture, Hindu temples, a mosque, and the Roman Catholic cathedral in a microcosm of Seychellois diversity.

Seychellois cuisine is a Creole fusion of African, French, Indian, and Chinese influences that revolves around the abundant seafood of the Indian Ocean. Grilled fish with Creole sauce (tomato, onion, ginger, and chili), octopus curry in coconut milk, and bat curry (yes, fruit bat is a Seychellois delicacy) represent the local culinary tradition. Ladob, a sweet or savory dish of plantain and sweet potato simmered in coconut milk with vanilla and nutmeg, is comfort food at its most tropical. The local beer, SeyBrew, and the potent fermented toddy called calou, tapped from coconut palms, fuel the island's social life.

From Victoria, the treasures of Mahé and the inner Seychelles islands unfurl in every direction. Beau Vallon, Mahé's most popular beach, offers a long crescent of white sand with excellent swimming and snorkeling. The Morne Seychellois National Park, covering over 20% of Mahé, protects the island's mountainous spine and its endemic cloud forest, accessible via hiking trails that climb through cinnamon plantations to viewpoints overlooking the island and the surrounding ocean. Day trips by boat reach Praslin, home to the UNESCO-listed Vallée de Mai where wild coco de mer palms grow in a prehistoric forest, and La Digue, whose Anse Source d'Argent beach — framed by giant granite boulders — is considered one of the most beautiful in the world.

Azamara and MSC Cruises call at Port Victoria's harbor, with ships docking within walking distance of the market and town center. The Seychelles' equatorial position ensures warm weather year-round (27-30°C), but the best time to visit is April-May and October-November, the calm transitional periods between monsoon seasons when the seas are at their clearest and calmest.
