Piran, Slovenia

Piran is the jewel of Slovenia's forty-seven-kilometer coastline — a medieval Venetian town on a narrow peninsula jutting into the Adriatic that compresses more Mediterranean charm into its compact footprint than many cities manage across entire waterfronts.

Tartini Square, named after the virtuoso violinist born here in 1692, serves as Piran's elegant living room — an oval piazza surrounded by Venetian Gothic and Renaissance buildings opening directly onto the harbor. The town's medieval walls, ascending to the Cathedral of St. George, provide the most rewarding walking in Slovenia. The salt pans of Sečovlje maintain salt-harvesting traditions dating to medieval times.
