Knysna sits on the shore of a tidal lagoon enclosed by two massive sandstone headlands—the Knysna Heads—that frame a narrow channel connecting the lagoon to the Indian Ocean. This setting, on South Africa's Garden Route in the Western Cape, is one of the most beautiful in the country: indigenous forest cloaks the hillsides, the lagoon shimmers in shades of jade and turquoise, and the town itself, draped along the waterfront and up the surrounding slopes, has developed into one of South Africa's most desirable small towns. George Rex, a rumored illegitimate son of George III who served as marshal of the Cape Colony, established the settlement in 1804, and something of his aristocratic taste survives in the town's refined atmosphere.

The lagoon is the center of Knysna's life. The Waterfront, a harbor-side development of restaurants, shops, and a brewery, provides the social focus, while the lagoon itself offers kayaking, paddleboarding, and boat cruises that provide views of the Heads from water level—a perspective that reveals the dramatic narrowness of the channel, where powerful tidal currents have claimed many vessels over the centuries. The eastern Head is accessible by road and provides a viewpoint over the channel, the lagoon, and the open ocean that is among the most photographed scenes on the Garden Route. The Featherbed Nature Reserve, on the western Head, offers guided eco-tours through coastal fynbos and milkwood forest.

Knysna's food scene is one of the finest in small-town South Africa, anchored by the legendary Knysna oysters. The Knysna Oyster Company has cultivated Pacific oysters in the lagoon since the 1940s, and the Knysna Oyster Festival, held annually in July, has grown into one of South Africa's premier food and sports events. The oysters—briny, plump, and best consumed with a squeeze of lemon and a glass of local MCC (Méthode Cap Classique) sparkling wine—are available year-round at the Waterfront restaurants and directly from the oyster farm. Beyond oysters, the town's restaurants serve sophisticated South African cuisine: springbok carpaccio, linefish with Cape Malay spices, and bobotie (a spiced minced meat bake that is the Cape's national dish), accompanied by wines from the nearby Stellenbosch, Franschhoek, and Hemel-en-Aarde wine regions.

The indigenous forests surrounding Knysna are among the last remnants of the temperate forest that once covered much of the southern Cape coast. The Knysna Forest, with its yellowwood and stinkwood trees (some over 800 years old), is home to the last surviving—and almost never seen—Knysna elephants, a tiny population that has captured the national imagination despite their extreme shyness. Walking and mountain biking trails wind through the forest, passing fern-draped ravines, streams, and the occasional clearing where bushbuck and vervet monkeys can be observed. The Garden of Eden, a loop trail through old-growth forest along the N2, provides an accessible introduction to this remarkable ecosystem.

Knysna is accessible by road on the Garden Route (between Cape Town and Port Elizabeth) and serves as a port of call for small expedition cruise vessels that can navigate the Heads' narrow channel. The best time to visit is October through April (South African spring through autumn), with December through February offering the warmest weather and longest days. The Oyster Festival in July brings the town to life during winter. The Garden Route's moderate climate—mild winters, warm summers, and rainfall spread throughout the year—makes Knysna a genuinely year-round destination.
