South Georgia
On the northern coast of South Georgia, where glaciers descend from the Allardyce Range to meet the shore, Fortuna Bay opens as a wide, glacially carved amphitheatre that hosts one of the island's most magnificent king penguin colonies. The bay holds a special place in the annals of Antarctic exploration: it was here, at the head of the bay near the Konig Glacier, that Ernest Shackleton, Tom Crean, and Frank Worsley completed their legendary crossing of South Georgia's mountainous interior in May 1916 — a thirty-six-hour march without maps or proper equipment that has been called the greatest journey in the history of exploration. The whaling station at Stromness, where they finally found rescue, lies just over the ridge to the east.
The character of Fortuna Bay is one of grand, sweeping beauty on a sub-Antarctic scale. The bay curves in a wide arc, its shores alternating between dark sand beaches, rocky outcrops, and patches of tussock grass that provide shelter for nesting birds. At the head of the bay, the Konig Glacier flows down from the mountains in a river of ice, its face calving small bergs into the meltwater lake at its terminus. The mountains of the Allardyce Range, rising to over 2,000 metres, form a dramatic backdrop that catches the light differently with every shift of weather — white and pristine under fresh snow, dark and forbidding under cloud, and occasionally gilded by a shaft of sub-Antarctic sunshine that breaks through the overcast to illuminate a peak or a glacier in sudden, theatrical brilliance.
The king penguin colony at Fortuna Bay is the bay's primary wildlife attraction. Several thousand breeding pairs gather on the beach and the grass behind it, their elegant forms — black and white bodies topped with striking orange auricular patches — creating a scene of extraordinary natural beauty. The colony includes birds at every stage of the breeding cycle: adults performing their distinctive head-swaying courtship display, pairs incubating single eggs on their feet, and the remarkable oakum boys — chicks covered in dense brown down that makes them look like oversized, bedraggled teddy bears. Antarctic fur seals, often aggressive and best given a wide berth, patrol the beach margins, while elephant seals loll in muddy wallows with the magnificent unconcern of creatures that have no natural predators on land.
The Shackleton Walk from Fortuna Bay to Stromness retraces the final stage of the explorer's epic journey and is offered on some expedition itineraries as an optional hike. The route crosses the ridge behind the bay, following a path that Shackleton and his companions negotiated in darkness and desperation, sliding down an ice slope on coiled rope in a moment that has become legendary. The walk takes approximately three hours and is graded as moderate to challenging, with some steep and potentially muddy sections. The reward is both the physical accomplishment and the emotional resonance of walking in the footsteps of one of history's greatest survivors.
Fortuna Bay is accessible by Zodiac from expedition cruise ships visiting South Georgia, with landings managed under strict environmental guidelines. The season runs from October through March, with November through January offering the peak of king penguin breeding activity. Weather conditions in South Georgia are notoriously changeable — four seasons in a single hour is not unusual — and all landings are subject to conditions assessed by the expedition team on the day. Visitors should be prepared for wind, rain, and the possibility of postponement or cancellation, balanced against the knowledge that a successful landing at Fortuna Bay provides one of the most complete and memorable wildlife and historical experiences available in the sub-Antarctic.
