Lake Geneva

Shaped like a vast crescent moon cradled between the Alps and the Jura Mountains, Lake Geneva — Lac Leman to the French and Swiss who share its shores — is the largest lake in Western Europe and one of the most storied bodies of water on the continent. Its surface, an extraordinary 580 square kilometres of Alpine-fed freshwater, has reflected the ambitions and anxieties of European civilisation for millennia: the Romans planted vineyards on its northern terraces, Byron and Shelley wrote their gothic masterpieces on its stormy shores, and the diplomats of the 20th century chose its southern bank as the seat of international governance. To cruise Lake Geneva is to traverse a living textbook of European culture, framed by some of the most beautiful scenery on Earth.

The Swiss Riviera — the arc of shoreline stretching from Lausanne to Montreux — concentrates some of Switzerland's most refined pleasures into a 30-kilometre promenade. Lausanne, perched on three hills above the lake, houses the International Olympic Committee headquarters and an old town of medieval lanes, fountains, and the Gothic cathedral whose rose window is among the finest in Switzerland. Montreux, at the eastern end of the arc, is famous for its jazz festival, its microclimate that supports palm trees and sub-tropical gardens, and the Chateau de Chillon — a medieval water castle on a rocky islet that inspired Lord Byron's poem "The Prisoner of Chillon" and remains one of the most visited monuments in Switzerland.

The Lavaux vineyard terraces, cascading down the steep slopes between Lausanne and Montreux, are a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most visually stunning wine regions in the world. These stone-walled terraces have been cultivated since at least the 11th century, when Cistercian monks first planted the Chasselas grape that still dominates the appellation. The microclimate created by the "three suns" — direct sunlight, light reflected from the lake surface, and heat radiated from the stone walls — produces white wines of delicate minerality that are rarely exported and best tasted at the vignerons' cellars in the tiny vineyard villages of Epesses, Saint-Saphorin, and Dezaley, where glasses are poured with views across the lake to the snow-capped summits of the French Alps.

The French shore of the lake — the Haute-Savoie — offers its own distinct character. Evian-les-Bains, source of the famous mineral water, is a belle epoque spa town of ornate hotels and thermal baths. The medieval town of Yvoire, classified among the Plus Beaux Villages de France, sits on a promontory that juts into the lake, its 14th-century castle and flower-filled lanes creating a scene of almost excessive picturesqueness. The town of Thonon-les-Bains provides access to the Chablais Alps and the cheese-making pastures where Abondance and Reblochon are produced — the raw materials for raclette and fondue, Switzerland and Savoy's greatest contributions to convivial dining.

Lake Geneva is served by Avalon Waterways on Swiss lake and river itineraries. The prime visiting season runs from May through October, with June and September offering the most pleasant balance of warm weather, clear Alpine views, and manageable visitor numbers. The Montreux Jazz Festival in July and the Fete des Vignerons, a once-in-a-generation wine festival held in Vevey, add cultural highlights to a destination that scarcely needs them.
