Ras Al Khaimah is the northernmost of the seven United Arab Emirates, and in many ways the most intriguing — a place where the relentless modernity of Dubai and Abu Dhabi gives way to a landscape of ancient mountains, mangrove-fringed coastlines, and archaeological sites that trace human habitation back seven thousand years. While its southern neighbours have built their identities on skyscrapers and shopping malls, Ras Al Khaimah — known locally as RAK — has quietly cultivated a different kind of appeal: one rooted in natural beauty, cultural authenticity, and a sense of adventure that the glitzier emirates have largely paved over.

The Hajar Mountains form the dramatic backbone of RAK, their rust-red peaks rising to 1,934 metres at Jebel Jais — the highest point in the UAE and home to the world's longest zipline, a vertiginous 2.83-kilometre flight across a mountain canyon. The mountain roads wind through villages of mud-brick watchtowers and terraced date-palm gardens that have been cultivated since antiquity. The contrast with the coastal plain could not be more dramatic: below the mountains, a broad strip of sand, mangrove, and turquoise Arabian Gulf water stretches to the horizon, dotted with flamingo-haunted lagoons and the ruins of pearl-diving settlements that once made this coast one of the wealthiest in the Gulf.

The archaeological heritage of Ras Al Khaimah is remarkable. The National Museum, housed in a former fort overlooking the old town, displays artefacts from the ancient trading civilisation of Magan, which exported copper to Mesopotamia four thousand years ago. The abandoned village of Al Jazirah Al Hamra — the last authentic pearling village on the Arabian Gulf coast — stands exactly as its inhabitants left it in the 1960s, its coral-stone houses and wind-tower mansions crumbling photogenically against the seafront. Shimal, a Bronze Age necropolis and settlement site on the outskirts of the modern city, has yielded some of the most important archaeological finds in the Gulf region, including the famous "Shimal Warrior" burial with its bronze weapons and ceremonial vessels.

RAK's cuisine reflects its position at the crossroads of Persian, Indian, and Bedouin culinary traditions. Fresh fish from the Gulf — hammour (grouper), shari (emperor bream), and prawns — is grilled over charcoal at beachside restaurants, while Emirati home cooking offers dishes like harees (slow-cooked wheat and lamb porridge), machbous (spiced rice with meat or seafood), and luqaimat (sweet, saffron-scented dumplings drizzled with date syrup). The dhow harbour, where traditional wooden fishing boats still return with the morning catch, is the best place to experience the maritime culture that has defined RAK for millennia.

Ras Al Khaimah is a port of call for Celestyal Cruises and Seabourn on their Arabian Gulf itineraries. Ships typically dock at the modern port facility, from which the old town, national museum, and mountain excursions are easily accessible. The best time to visit is October through April, when temperatures are pleasantly warm rather than searing, and the mountain hiking and desert excursions are at their most enjoyable. For travellers who want to experience the Emirates beyond the mega-malls and artificial islands, Ras Al Khaimah is the authentic, adventure-rich alternative.
