Where the Tennessee River cuts through a gap in the Appalachian Mountains, creating a natural crossroads that has attracted human settlement for millennia, Chattanooga has reinvented itself from one of America's most polluted cities into one of its most livable — a remarkable transformation that has become a case study in urban renewal and a beacon for sustainable development. This mid-sized Southern city, nestled between Lookout Mountain and Signal Mountain, now draws visitors with its vibrant arts scene, world-class aquarium, and outdoor recreation opportunities that take full advantage of its spectacular natural setting.

The Tennessee Aquarium, located on the downtown riverfront, is consistently ranked among the finest in the United States. Its two buildings — one dedicated to freshwater environments, the other to ocean ecosystems — present a journey from the Appalachian mountain streams (where hellbenders and brook trout inhabit pristine waters) through the Tennessee River system to the open ocean (where sharks, rays, and sea turtles glide through a vast central tank). The aquarium's emphasis on regional ecosystems gives visitors a deep appreciation for the extraordinary biodiversity of the Tennessee River watershed — one of the most biologically diverse temperate freshwater systems in the world.

Lookout Mountain, rising 700 meters above the city, offers a trio of attractions that have drawn visitors since the nineteenth century. Rock City, a garden trail through massive sandstone formations on the mountain's brow, culminates in a point from which seven states are reputedly visible on clear days. Ruby Falls, a 44-meter underground waterfall within the mountain, is reached through a limestone cavern system that has been thrilling visitors since its discovery in 1928. The Incline Railway, billed as the world's steepest passenger railway, ascends the mountain's face at a maximum grade of 72.7 percent — an exhilarating ride that provides panoramic views of the city and the river valley below.

Chattanooga's downtown revival centers on the riverfront, where the Tennessee Riverwalk — a thirteen-mile pedestrian and cycling path — connects parks, restaurants, and cultural venues along the water's edge. The Walnut Street Bridge, one of the longest pedestrian bridges in the world, spans the river with views of the surrounding mountains. The Bluff View Art District, perched on a cliff above the river, concentrates galleries, restaurants, and a sculpture garden in a compact neighborhood of restored Victorian buildings.

River cruise ships navigating the Tennessee River dock at Chattanooga's Ross's Landing, where the city's waterfront attractions begin immediately at the gangway. The city's compact downtown is easily walkable, though Lookout Mountain excursions require shuttle or bus transport. The most pleasant visiting season runs from April through October, with spring (April-May) bringing dogwood and azalea blooms and autumn (September-October) painting the surrounding mountains in spectacular color. Summer is warm and humid, typical of the American South, while winters are mild by northern standards, with occasional snowfall adding drama to the mountain scenery.
