Where the Columbia River Gorge reaches its most dramatic expression — with basalt cliffs rising 600 meters on either side and waterfalls plunging from the rim in silver threads — the small city of Hood River, Oregon, has established itself as one of the Pacific Northwest's most vibrant outdoor recreation destinations. This compact community of roughly 8,000 residents sits at the confluence of the Hood River and the Columbia, with the snow-capped cone of Mount Hood (3,429 meters) rising to the south in one of America's most iconic mountain panoramas.

The Columbia River Gorge, designated a National Scenic Area in 1986, is the defining feature of Hood River's landscape and identity. The gorge was carved by massive floods at the end of the last Ice Age — the Missoula Floods, which discharged water at a rate ten times the combined flow of all the world's rivers — creating the only sea-level passage through the Cascade Range. The resulting landscape of towering cliffs, columnar basalt, and over seventy waterfalls within the gorge boundaries creates scenery of almost overwhelming grandeur. Multnomah Falls, the most famous, drops 189 meters in two cascading tiers and can be viewed from the historic lodge at its base.

Hood River has earned international recognition as one of the world's premier windsurfing and kiteboarding destinations. The gorge acts as a natural wind tunnel, funneling strong, reliable winds through the narrow passage between the Cascades and the Coast Range. These conditions, combined with the river's strong current, create the challenging, exhilarating water conditions that have attracted wind athletes from around the globe since the sport's early days in the 1980s. Even non-participants find the spectacle of dozens of colorful sails and kites dancing across the water a compelling visual experience.

The Hood River Valley, stretching south from the city toward Mount Hood, is one of the Pacific Northwest's most productive agricultural areas. Orchards of apples, pears, and cherries blanket the valley floor, and the fruit stands and U-pick operations that line the valley roads offer seasonal harvests of extraordinary quality. The valley's wineries — producing cool-climate Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and the distinctive fruit wines made from the region's abundant berries — have added a sophisticated tasting dimension to the agricultural landscape. The annual Blossom Festival in April transforms the valley into a sea of pink and white petals against the backdrop of Mount Hood's glaciers.

River cruise ships dock at Hood River's waterfront, where the city's compact downtown is immediately accessible on foot. The town's Main Street offers craft breweries (Full Sail Brewing, the gorge's original craft brewery, is a local institution), farm-to-table restaurants, and outdoor gear shops that reflect the community's active lifestyle. The most spectacular visiting conditions occur from April through October, with spring bringing the Blossom Festival and waterfalls at peak flow, summer delivering warm weather and the best wind conditions, and autumn painting the gorge in layers of gold and crimson that make this stretch of the Columbia one of the most photogenic landscapes in the American West.
