Hoonah

On the northeastern shore of Chichagof Island in Alaska's Inside Passage, the Tlingit village of Hoonah holds the distinction of being the largest Tlingit community in Alaska — a place where one of the most sophisticated indigenous cultures of the Pacific Northwest maintains its living traditions against a backdrop of temperate rainforest, glacial fjords, and some of the richest wildlife habitat in North America.

The Tlingit people of Hoonah — the Huna Tlingit — have inhabited this region for thousands of years, developing a culture of extraordinary artistic, social, and ecological sophistication. Their clan system, organized around two moieties (Eagle and Raven), governs marriage, inheritance, and the elaborate ceremonial life that finds its most visible expression in the carved totem poles, formline art, and regalia that represent one of the world's great artistic traditions. The Huna Tribal House, a modern clan house built in traditional style, serves as both a cultural center and a living expression of Tlingit identity.

Icy Strait Point, developed by the Huna Totem Corporation (the village's Alaska Native corporation), provides the primary cruise passenger experience. This facility, centered on a restored 1912 salmon cannery, has been developed with unusual sensitivity to cultural and environmental values — the Tlingit community retains ownership and control, ensuring that the visitor experience reflects authentic cultural perspectives rather than external projections. The restored cannery museum documents the salmon canning industry that shaped the region's twentieth-century history, while cultural performances, traditional food tastings, and craft demonstrations provide genuine encounters with Tlingit traditions.

The surrounding environment is classic Southeast Alaska at its finest. Humpback whales congregate in Icy Strait in numbers that make this one of the most reliable whale-watching locations in the world — Point Adolphus, across the strait from Hoonah, is widely considered the single best spot for humpback viewing in all of Alaska. Brown bears fish for salmon in the streams that drain into the strait, bald eagles perch on every available snag, and Steller sea lions haul out on the rocky islets that dot the channel.

Cruise ships dock at the Icy Strait Point pier, which can accommodate large vessels alongside. The facility is located approximately two kilometers from the village of Hoonah itself, accessible by shuttle or a pleasant waterfront walk. The Alaska cruise season runs from May through September, with June through August offering the warmest temperatures (12-18°C) and the longest daylight hours. The humpback whale season peaks from June through August, while salmon runs (and the bears that follow them) are most active from July through September. The combination of Tlingit cultural authenticity, exceptional wildlife, and the community-controlled visitor experience makes Hoonah one of the most meaningful port calls in Alaska.
