Jackson sits in a valley so dramatic it earned the name "the Hole"—a high-altitude basin ringed by the most photogenic mountain range in North America. The Teton Range rises without foothills from the valley floor, a wall of granite spires and hanging glaciers that has been drawing artists, mountaineers, and dreamers since fur trappers first passed through in the early 1800s. Grand Teton itself, at 13,775 feet, is a peak of almost geometric perfection, its reflection in the still waters of Jenny Lake one of the most reproduced images in American landscape photography.

The town of Jackson has evolved from a rough-hewn ranching outpost into a sophisticated mountain community that manages to retain its Western authenticity. Elk antler arches mark the corners of the historic Town Square, where wooden boardwalks front galleries, boutiques, and some of Wyoming's finest restaurants. The National Museum of Wildlife Art, built into a hillside above the National Elk Refuge, houses one of the world's premier collections of wildlife-themed artwork. In winter, the town transforms into a ski destination of rare quality, with Jackson Hole Mountain Resort offering some of the most challenging terrain in North America and a vertical drop that ranks among the continent's greatest.

The culinary scene in Jackson has undergone a remarkable transformation. Restaurants like The Kitchen and Persephone Bakery source ingredients from local ranches and forage from the surrounding wilderness, creating menus that reflect the seasons with precision. Bison, elk, and Snake River trout appear alongside wild huckleberries and morel mushrooms. The craft cocktail and microbrewery culture thrives, with après-ski and après-hike traditions equally well served. For a quintessential experience, book a covered-wagon cookout under the Tetons, where the steaks are grilled over open fire and the Milky Way puts on a show that no city-dweller can comprehend.

Grand Teton National Park offers hiking, kayaking, and wildlife viewing of extraordinary caliber. The Cascade Canyon Trail leads into the heart of the range, with encounters with moose, black bears, and pikas along the way. A scenic float on the Snake River provides a gentler perspective on the landscape, with bald eagles and osprey overhead. Yellowstone National Park, just an hour's drive north, extends the possibilities to include geysers, hot springs, and one of the last intact ecosystems in the temperate world. The Lamar Valley in Yellowstone's northeast corner is the finest place in North America to observe wolves in the wild.

Jackson serves as a gateway for expedition-style itineraries through the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem, often combined with visits to Yellowstone, Montana ranch country, and the Idaho backcountry. The best seasons are summer (June–September) for hiking and wildlife, and winter (December–March) for skiing and the surreal beauty of snow-covered Tetons. September and early October bring the elk rut, aspen gold, and thinner crowds—arguably the finest weeks of the year.
