Rising from the island-studded waters of the Salish Sea in northwestern Washington State, the San Juan Islands form an archipelago of remarkable natural beauty and ecological significance — 172 named islands and reefs scattered between the American mainland and the Canadian border, their forested ridges and rocky shorelines providing habitat for one of the Pacific Northwest's most important marine ecosystems. This is a landscape shaped by glaciers, defined by tides, and animated by wildlife that includes three pods of endangered resident orcas, the largest breeding population of bald eagles in the contiguous United States, and harbor seals in numbers that seem almost extravagant.

The three main islands — San Juan, Orcas, and Lopez — each possess a distinctive character that reflects the varied human communities drawn to island life. San Juan Island, with its Friday Harbor village and whale-watching heritage, combines cultural amenities with front-row wildlife viewing. Orcas Island, the largest and most topographically dramatic, rises to the 734-meter summit of Mount Constitution, from whose stone observation tower the panoramic view encompasses the Cascade Range, the Olympic Mountains, Vancouver Island, and Mount Baker's glacier-capped cone. Lopez Island, the flattest and most agricultural, earns its nickname "the friendly island" through a tradition of waving to every passing car — a custom that captures the archipelago's spirit of community.

The marine environment is the heart of the San Juan Islands experience. The convergence of tidal currents around the islands creates conditions of exceptional biological productivity — nutrient upwelling drives phytoplankton blooms that support a food chain reaching from microscopic organisms to the apex predators that have made these waters famous. Minke whales, gray whales, and humpback whales join the resident orcas in these nutrient-rich waters, while Steller and California sea lions haul out on exposed rocks and harbor porpoises surface quietly in sheltered bays.

The islands' food culture has evolved remarkably over the past two decades, with small-scale farmers, oyster growers, and artisan producers creating a locavore movement that precedes the term. San Juan Island's farms produce lavender, alpaca fiber, and grass-fed beef; Lopez Island's orchards yield heritage apple varieties; and the surrounding waters provide oysters, mussels, Dungeness crab, and spot prawns of exceptional quality. The dining scene, particularly on San Juan and Orcas Islands, offers farm-and-sea-to-table experiences that rival those of much larger culinary destinations.

Expedition cruise ships navigate the inter-island passages with relative ease, anchoring in the harbors of Friday Harbor (San Juan Island) or Eastsound (Orcas Island) and tendering passengers ashore. Washington State Ferries connect the main islands to the mainland at Anacortes and to Sidney, British Columbia. The visiting season runs from May through October, with the warmest weather and longest days from June through September. The islands' rain shadow position — sheltered from Pacific weather systems by the Olympic Mountains — creates surprisingly dry, sunny conditions that surprise visitors expecting Seattle-style gray.
