Mystery Island is not, despite its evocative name, particularly mysterious — but it is magnificently, almost absurdly, beautiful. This tiny, uninhabited coral islet in the southernmost reaches of Vanuatu measures barely a kilometre across and is fringed by white-sand beaches so pristine they seem to have been placed there for a travel brochure that no one has yet bothered to photograph. Known to the people of neighbouring Aneityum island as Inyeug, the islet has served for centuries as a seasonal fishing camp and gathering place, and it retains a sense of unspoiled simplicity that has become vanishingly rare in the Pacific. There are no buildings, no roads, no Wi-Fi — just sand, sea, coral, and sky.

What Mystery Island does have is a grass airstrip, laid out by the US military during World War II and now used occasionally by small charter planes. This incongruous feature — a green runway bisecting a coral cay — adds a certain surreal charm, as do the local Aneityumese villagers who set up cultural displays, handicraft stalls, and a small bar selling fresh coconut water and kava when cruise ships call. The welcome is warm and genuine: string-band musicians playing Melanesian tunes on ukuleles and guitars greet arriving tenders, and the villagers are happy to share their knowledge of the island's plants, marine life, and cultural traditions.

The main attraction of Mystery Island is, quite simply, the water. The surrounding coral reef, easily accessible by snorkelling directly from the beach, supports an abundance of tropical fish — parrotfish, butterflyfish, angelfish, and the occasional reef shark gliding through deeper channels. The visibility is extraordinary, often exceeding twenty metres, and the water temperature hovers around a blissful twenty-six degrees year-round. For those who prefer to stay dry, glass-bottom boat tours offer a window into the reef's kaleidoscopic world, while kayaks and stand-up paddleboards are available for exploring the islet's perimeter and the shallow lagoon between Mystery Island and the Aneityum mainland.

Aneityum itself, visible across the channel, is Vanuatu's southernmost inhabited island and rewards a day trip for those with a spirit of adventure. The island's interior is a dramatic landscape of cloud-forested peaks, waterfalls, and valleys where traditional ni-Vanuatu culture endures largely untouched by the modern world. The Mission Ruins at Anelgauhat, remnants of a Presbyterian mission established in the 1840s, speak to the complex history of Pacific evangelisation. The birding on Aneityum is exceptional, with several endemic species including the Vanuatu kingfisher and the mountain starling. The waters around both islands are part of a locally managed marine protected area, ensuring that the reef ecosystem remains as vibrant as it has been for millennia.

Mystery Island is a port of call for Carnival Cruise Line, Oceania Cruises, and Royal Caribbean on their South Pacific itineraries. Ships anchor offshore and tender passengers to the beach — an arrival that, given the setting, feels more like a castaway fantasy than a scheduled cruise stop. The best time to visit is April through October, the dry season, when trade winds moderate the tropical heat and the skies are reliably clear. Mystery Island offers no luxury facilities, no infinity pools, no spa treatments — but it offers something rarer: a few hours on one of the most beautiful and unspoiled beaches in the Pacific, shared only with the fish, the birds, and the welcoming people of Aneityum.
