Vinh Long is a river town at the very heart of the Mekong Delta, positioned on the Co Chien River — one of the Mekong's nine major distributaries — in a landscape so intricately woven with water that the distinction between land and river becomes almost academic. This is the rice basket of Vietnam, a region that produces enough grain to feed the country and export to the world, and Vinh Long sits at its centre like a hub in a vast, green, watery web. The town itself is modest and unpolished — a market town of 150,000 where the rhythms of life revolve around the tides, the harvest, and the daily churn of the floating markets.

The floating markets of the Mekong Delta are Vinh Long's great attraction, and the best way to experience them is by sampan in the early morning light. Cai Be, the most famous market in the Vinh Long area, begins before dawn, as wooden boats laden with pineapples, watermelons, coconuts, and dragon fruit converge on a stretch of river where buying and selling happen across gunwales, with transactions conducted in shouts, gestures, and the universal language of ripe produce. Each boat hangs its principal commodity from a tall pole — a floating billboard system that has been in use for centuries. The atmosphere is one of controlled chaos, punctuated by the put-put of sampan motors and the occasional rooster crowing from a boat that also carries livestock.

The cuisine of the Mekong Delta is shaped by its extraordinary agricultural fertility. Rice, naturally, is the foundation, but it is the river's fish, the delta's tropical fruits, and the region's aromatic herbs that give the cooking its distinctive character. Ca tai tuong — elephant ear fish, the delta's signature dish — is deep-fried whole until the skin puffs and crackles, then served vertically on a platter for diners to disassemble into rice-paper rolls with herbs, pickled vegetables, and nuoc mam dipping sauce. Hu tieu, a clear pork broth with rice noodles, prawns, and a jungle of fresh herbs, is the delta's answer to pho — lighter, brighter, and more delicate. Coconut candy, produced in cottage workshops throughout the delta, is made from fresh coconut milk and sugar and sold wrapped in edible rice paper — a sweet, chewy souvenir that captures the region's tropical abundance.

Beyond the markets, Vinh Long offers a window into the delta's artisan traditions and rural life. Visits to brick kilns, where local clay is fired into the distinctive orange bricks used throughout the delta, reveal an industry that has changed little in centuries. Fruit orchards on the river islands — An Binh and Binh Hoa Phuoc — welcome visitors with tastings of rambutan, longan, mangosteen, and the notoriously pungent durian. Homestays on the islands offer the most immersive delta experience: sleeping in a wooden house beside the canal, waking to the sound of birdsong and boat motors, and sharing breakfast with a family whose hospitality is as warm as the tropical air.

Vinh Long is a port of call for Avalon Waterways and Uniworld River Cruises on their Mekong River itineraries. Sampan transfers from the ship to the floating markets and island orchards are typically included, providing an intimate, water-level perspective on delta life. The best time to visit is November through April, the dry season, when the delta's waterways are calm and the weather is warm and sunny.
