Tanjung Suarez (Española)

Suarez Point, (Espaã‘Ola)

Punta Suarez, at the western tip of Española Island in the Galápagos archipelago, is where evolution puts on its most spectacular show. This rocky headland, battered by Pacific swells and swept by the Humboldt Current, is the only place on Earth where the waved albatross breeds — over 12,000 pairs of these magnificent seabirds, with wingspans exceeding two meters, gather here from April to December to court, mate, and raise their chicks on the bare volcanic rock. Charles Darwin visited the Galápagos in 1835 aboard HMS Beagle, and while he did not land on Española, the island's extraordinary wildlife would have confirmed every intuition that led him to his theory of natural selection.

The approach to Punta Suarez by zodiac is itself a wildlife encounter. Marine iguanas — the world's only seagoing lizards, found nowhere else on Earth — bask in dense aggregations on the lava rocks, their dark bodies absorbing the equatorial sun between foraging dives in the cold, nutrient-rich waters. Galápagos sea lions lounge on the boulder beaches, pups tumbling in the surf with an abandon that makes human visitors smile involuntarily. Sally Lightfoot crabs, their carapaces painted in shades of scarlet and electric blue, scuttle across the rocks in one of nature's most vivid color studies.

The trail across Punta Suarez traverses a landscape that feels like the set of a nature documentary — because it literally is the subject of countless such films. Blue-footed boobies perform their famous courtship dance — a high-stepping, sky-pointing display of astonishing comic precision — directly on the trail, utterly indifferent to passing humans. Nazca boobies nest alongside, their white plumage a contrast to the blue-foots' darker coloring. Hood mockingbirds, the boldest of the Galápagos endemics, hop onto visitors' shoes and camera bags with a fearlessness that reflects millions of years of evolution without terrestrial predators. The trail culminates at a dramatic blowhole where ocean swells are compressed through a lava tube and ejected in a geyser of spray that can reach twenty meters.

Española is the oldest island in the Galápagos, estimated at 3.5 million years, and its age has given evolution maximum time to sculpt unique species. The marine iguanas here are distinctly colored — males develop vivid red and green markings during breeding season that are found on no other island. The lava lizards, Darwin's finches, and even the prickly pear cacti have diverged from their counterparts elsewhere in the archipelago, providing a living textbook of speciation. The surrounding waters, enriched by the cold Humboldt Current, support green sea turtles, Galápagos sharks, and schools of king angelfish that create underwater rainbows along the rocky reef.

Celebrity Cruises visits Punta Suarez on its Galápagos itineraries, with zodiac landings on the rocky shore. Visits are conducted in small groups with certified naturalist guides, as required by Galápagos National Park regulations. The best time to visit for waved albatross viewing is April through December, with peak courtship displays in April and May. January through March, when the albatrosses are at sea, offers warmer water temperatures and better snorkeling conditions. Española is a mandatory stop on any serious Galápagos itinerary — a place where the drama of evolution unfolds at arm's length.
