Durrës, Albania's second-largest city and principal port, sits on a bay of the Adriatic Sea that has been continuously inhabited for over three thousand years — making it one of the oldest cities in the Balkans. Founded in 627 BC as the Greek colony of Epidamnos, the city later became the Roman Dyrrachium, serving as the western terminus of the Via Egnatia — the great Roman road that connected the Adriatic to Constantinople and provided the land bridge between Rome's western and eastern empires. This strategic position has given Durrës a history of extraordinary richness and complexity.

The city's most impressive ancient monument is its Roman amphitheatre, discovered by accident in 1966 when construction workers broke through its buried walls. The amphitheatre, one of the largest on the Balkan peninsula, once seated twenty thousand spectators for gladiatorial contests and is remarkable for several reasons: its size, its state of preservation despite centuries of burial, and the early Christian chapel built within its walls, decorated with rare Byzantine-era mosaics that represent some of the finest early Christian art in Albania. The ongoing excavation continues to reveal new sections, making each visit potentially different from the last.

Modern Durrës is a city of compelling contrasts. The seafront promenade — lined with palm trees, modern hotels, and busy cafés — presents Albania's most developed tourism face, while the streets behind reveal Ottoman-era mosques, Byzantine walls, and the faded grandeur of Italian colonial architecture from Mussolini's occupation of the 1930s. The Archaeological Museum, overlooking the sea, houses an excellent collection spanning from Illyrian prehistory through the Greek, Roman, and Byzantine periods, providing essential context for understanding a city that has absorbed and reflected every major Mediterranean civilization.

Albanian cuisine, long obscured by the country's decades of isolation under the communist regime of Enver Hoxha, is experiencing a renaissance that Durrës' restaurants showcase with increasing confidence. The seafood is exceptional — Adriatic shrimp, mussels from the bay, grilled fish of remarkable freshness — served alongside the traditional tavë kosi (lamb baked with yogurt and eggs), byrek (flaky pastry with cheese or spinach), and the mezze-style appetizers that reflect Albania's Ottoman and Mediterranean influences. Albanian wine, from indigenous grape varieties grown on hillsides that have supported viticulture since antiquity, is a genuine discovery for most visitors.

Durrës is Albania's busiest port, handling ferries from Italy (Bari, Ancona, and Trieste) and an increasing number of cruise ships. The city centre is easily walkable, with the amphitheatre, museum, and waterfront promenade all within comfortable distance. The best visiting season is May through October, with summer bringing the warmest beach weather and the liveliest atmosphere along the promenade. Albania remains one of Europe's most affordable destinations, and Durrës provides an accessible introduction to a country that is rapidly being discovered — offering Mediterranean beauty, ancient history, and genuine hospitality at a fraction of the cost of neighbouring Greece or Montenegro.
