Melk has been a seat of power and learning on the Danube since the Babenberg dynasty established their fortress here in the tenth century. In 1089, Leopold II donated the castle to Benedictine monks, who transformed it into Melk Abbey — a monumental baroque masterpiece that Umberto Eco used as the inspiration for his novel "The Name of the Rose." The abbey's library, containing over 100,000 medieval manuscripts, was one of the greatest repositories of knowledge in medieval Europe.

The abbey dominates the Danube valley with theatrical grandeur. Perched on a rocky bluff sixty metres above the river, its golden-yellow facade stretches over 320 metres, flanked by twin towers. The interior is a riot of baroque exuberance — frescoed ceilings by Paul Troger, gold leaf ornament of extraordinary intricacy, and the magnificent Marble Hall whose painted ceiling creates the illusion of an open sky. Below the abbey, the small town clusters along narrow medieval streets, its pastel-coloured houses and traditional bakeries providing a gentle contrast.

The culinary traditions of Melk draw on the Wachau Valley's bounty. The Wachauer Marille appears in every conceivable form: as Marillenknödel, Marillenstrudel, apricot schnapps, and preserves. Tafelspitz, Austria's iconic boiled beef with apple-horseradish sauce, is a lunch staple at traditional Gasthäuser. Local Riesling and Grüner Veltliner from the surrounding terraced vineyards are served in centuries-old wine taverns.

The Wachau Valley stretching east to Krems is a UNESCO World Heritage landscape. The ruined castle of Aggstein, perched 300 metres above the Danube, can be reached in twenty minutes. Dürnstein, where Richard the Lionheart was held captive, lies thirty minutes downstream. The valley's wine villages — Spitz, Weißenkirchen, and Joching — invite unhurried afternoon wandering through vineyards and tastings in traditional Heurige wine taverns.

Melk is served by A-ROSA, AmaWaterways, APT Cruising, Avalon Waterways, Celebrity Cruises, CroisiEurope, Emerald Cruises, P&O Cruises, Riviera Travel, Scenic River Cruises, Tauck, Uniworld River Cruises, Viking, and VIVA Cruises. It pairs naturally with Krems, Vienna, and Bratislava. The ideal visiting season runs from April through October.
